CURRENT NOTES OF THE TURF. Lord Roseberys flat racers will be trained next season at Newmarket by Percy Peck. Jules Garson intends to go to New Orleans as soon as possible to take up the string of horses he shipped there last Sunday. The King of Spain intends to have some horses in training at Maisons-Lafitte, France. He may send some to England next year. Thomas "Chicago" OBrien has some promising yearlings which he expects to race next year. OBrien will spend the winter months in New York. Lieut. Stanley Wootton, the noted English jockey, who won a commission and the Military Cross with the Seventeenth Royal Fusiliers, has been transferred to a cavalry regiment. David Gideon, who suffered from an attack of lumbago while at Bowie, has now fully recovered, but has not as yet dc ided whether to take in the racing at New Orleans or make a trip to California, witli Tijuana as the object in point. Jockeys last a long time in Australia. When R. Lewis won the Caulfield Cup at Sydney last month it was his seventeenth year of riding in that nice, and his first win of the cup. He first rode in the Cup race on The Heroine in 1S95, twenty-one years ago. W. Knapp, the veteran jockey, who has been on the ground for over two years, is keeping In good condition witli the hope of being reinstated by the Canadian Racing Associations, before whom lie re cently had a hearing. Knapp can still ride at 110 pounds and is breaking and exercising horses daily on the New York winter training camps. A cable from Perth, West Australia, to the High Commissioner for Australia in England, says that the Government of that State put into effect on December 1, the prohibition of bookmaking. The totalizator method is the legal system in West Australia, as it is in Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania and New Zealand. Victoria and New South Wales still have bookmaking. Racing Secretary A. McL. Earlocker of the Saratoga Racing Association reports that a total of 210 entries have been received for the Hopeful Stakes of 1917, instead of 200, as previously reported. The extra ten entries, though mailed from California and other faraway points before the closing hour, were not received until after the first figures were given out. There also were a few additional entries received for the United States and Grand Union Hotel Stakes.
