RAIN AT THE FAIR GROUNDS DOWNPOUR HELPS CONDITION OF THE RACE COUHSE AT NEW ORLEANS. Horses Belonging to W. R. Coa, B. T. Wilson, James Arthur, C. C. Capps end J. U. Strods Arrive Chalmers Seriously Sick. New Orleans, La., December 8. Training operations were curtailed to some extent at the Fair Grounds today by a heavy rain, but this served to help the course and, when it dries out, it will be better than at any time since the meeting closed here last spring. Despite the downpour a large number of horses were out and half of the forenoon had passed before the going became muddy. Among the latest arrivals were the horses of W. It. Coe, which numbered eleven, and, in the same ear. were two horses belonging to K. T. Wilson. The Coe horses are in charge of trainer Jerry Carroll, .while Al Weston has those of Wilson. The Coe consignment consists of Neville II., Mustard, .Tacoba, Polymelian, .Tack Mount, Wonderful, Oration and four yearlings. The Wilson horses are Navarre and Belle Ronald, the latter an imported filly. .lames Arthur got in with ten horses and C. C. Capps and J. U. Strode also brought their bands with this shipment. These horses came from Bowie, Md.. by way of Louisville, Ky. All shipped in good condition. The horses of C. K. G. Billings will arrive tomorrow, in charge of Charles Patterson, and will take quarters in a commodious new barn, recently built. A telegram was received today from I. D. Bogan, at San Francisco, in which he stated that John Lowe will arrive tomorrow morning with the stable of C. W. Clark, "The Copper King" of Montana, lie will bring fourteen horses and has four others which will come later. The crack sprinter Chalmers, by Peter Quince Lady Hope, owned by Joe Hawkins, of Lexington, Ky., developed a high fever on the train while being shipped with Will Perkins consignment. This morning his temperature was IO375 and a veterinary was with him the greater part of the day. This marked the first time in his racing career that Chalmers had been shipped out of Kentucky to run. Presiding Judge Joseph A. Murphys delayed arrival here is said to be due to his being in Memphis, Tenn., to confer with prominent persons there in relation to the proposed race meeting that is in contemplation next spring, and which will probably be held immediately after the close of the Hot Springs meeting. Secretary Joseph McLennan received word today from President Ollnra, of Hie P.owie track, that stall rent charges would hereafter be abolished and that horsemen would be privileged to stable their horses at the track without cost.
