ARCHER GREATEST JOCKEY OF ALL. At the time of his death "Danny" Maher was 35 years of age, just six years older than Fred Archer was when he passed away, fifteen years younger than that other famous rider, George Ford-ham, who was 50 years old when he died in 1887. Mailers wonderful riding record has been mentioned, but that of Fred Archer never has been equalled or approached, for, in the course of his sixteen years riding, he won 2,747 races, headed the list of successful jockeys for thirteen years in succession, and in 1878 won 223 out of the 600 races in which he rode, and of the classic races he won six St. Lcgers, four Oaks, five Derbys, four Two Thousand Guineas, and two One Thousand Guineas. In the course of his long career it began in 1850 and ended in 18S7 George Fordham, "The Demon" won 2,587 races, but, strangely enough, he never managed to win the St. Leger.
