CURRENT NOTES OF THE TURF. Barbae, Stone it Carriek have keaared Swe-ep for 818,989. John S. Barbae, acting for A. T,. Aste of New York, has booked five of his mares to Ballot. R. J. Mackenzie, the- well-known Canadian turfman, is siie-ieling the winter months in southern California. Jockeys R. Guy, A. Pickens. R. Ball and E. Taplin made- a good start for the new year, each having two winning mounts on January 1. Tin- good selling -plater Ratina, owned by Ed Cook, dieel last week at the Fair Grounds. Ratina contracted pneumonia while en route from Bowie. F. D. Weir duplieateil his success of New Years Day. 1910, at Juarez, on Monelay. when his entry finished one--two in the first two-year-old race of the year. Charlie Casey has two promising gray imported colts among the horses he is training for Grant Huge Browne at New Orleans. All in the Browne string are imported, except two. H. G. Bedwell, the leading owner of 1916. lost no time in starting to build up the revenues of his stable for 1917, winning the opening race of the New Years Day program at Havana.
