CONSIDERS CONTESSA AS A BARGAIN. English Paper Comments on Joyncrs Recent Purchase — Fred Taral Is Recuperating. New York. January 1. Oae of the most interesting features of the recent Newmarket sales was that in which horses bred by Baron Springer were sold by order of the public trustee custodian I under the "trading with the enemy act. 1911," through the medium of which five thoroughbreds— time two -year -olds and two yearlings were disposed of at a financial benefit to the government of ,300 says an English exchange. This was a happening of the final day of the sales, which were chiefly notable, as far as flaw 1 1 can purchases were concerned, because of the Inns of "Jack" .loyner of the seven year-old bav at brown mare Lady Gah-tte, for which he paid ,250, and Contessa, a seven year-old brown mare, for which Willis Sharpe Kilmer paid ,000. Lady Galette is by Lord Edward II. — St. Gallette. ami covered by Orby, while Contessa is by Count Schoniberg — litti. and covered by Bomba. With these accessions to American racing, it is anticipated that the tests of the near future will be indicative of the good which should be the outcome of the sportsmanship of the men for whom the purchases were made. Contessa was generally regarded as a bargain by iloso followers of the game abroad and a matron Which would aid breeding interests on this side of the "pond." These mares and the others of which mention has been made in these columns are expected to make for a stability in stud interests which must be beneficial in the near future. In connection with the "stand up-to-it-ive-ness" of the Doe-ember sales at Newmarket, it may be remarked that the increase in total of the 1916 sales over theae of the previous year is 0,000 for a total of 523 head for the five days sale, for which a total of 52.145 was obtained. Last year for 497 bead the total waa 21,040. While the Duke of Westminster has decided to retire from racing for a while, it is not known if this announcement means that the famous stud at Eaton will be broken up. In certain quarters it is sur mised that aaeh will be the case: but it is to be hoped that such an anticipation will prove to be incorrect. There are many famous memories surrounding Eaton, from which in the long ago came a host of winners of the highest class. Some years ago his grace secured at Ballymany. near the Curragh. a stud farm, which was purchased with a view of "casing the pressure." so to say, at Eaton. A lot of money was apeat on Ballymany. where the appointments were in eve ry way of the most suitable kind: and though the farm was carried on for only a few seasons, a measure of success attended this enterprise. Indeed, in this connection, the first horse bred there, and also the first to run. was a winner. This was Ballymany, by Volodyovski — Grey Lady. After some time Ballymany Stud Farm was sold, its new purchaser being Cant. Scarvell Cape, whose stallion at the place is Orpiment. a son of Ayrshire — Orph-rey. by Amphion — Orlet. by Bend Or. American sportsmen will be interested in the fact that Fred Taral. the erstwhile American jockey, who has been trainer for the string of Herr von Weinberg, in Germany, is now recovering from an attack of inflammation of the lungs. The attack was a severe one, but the physique of the one-time American riding star stood him in good stead, and le- is now on the mend and doing well.
