OFF DAY AT NEW ORLEANS ROUGH AND SLOW GOING DETRACTS FROM RACING, BUT A GOOD CROWD ATTENDS. Jacoba Captures the Principal Race of the Day — Bullion an Easy Winner — Mildred Euretta a Speedy Two-Year-Old. New Orleans. La., January 2. — There was a notice-able slump in todays attendance as compare-el With that of the opening day. but a surprisingly large crowel was on haml nevertheless, to view the decisions of this afternoons card at the Fair Grounds. Track conditions were still adverse to the sport the lumpy, rough going being to exacting for even the most sturdy racer. The Palm Garden activities were again voluminous. The sport was ordinary, small fields competing in the features, tiie winners of all of which scored with pronounced ease. Jacoba had been an odds-on favorite, but received only lukewarm support. Jefferson Livingstons Bullion was another pronounced choice, that won practically as his rider pleased. He was in with three- other three-year-olds in the Elks Club Handicap at three-quarters, took the lead at once and won in a canter. Nine two-year-old fillies accepteel the gage- in the dash for that age. They were an ordinary-appearing band and were decidedly green in the matter of racing e-ducation. Mildred Euretta, locally owned and at a big price, was the quickest on her feet soon after the start and, under a rousing ride by Murphy, won easing up. Miss Kruter and Talebearer were two choices, which won their races easily. Horsemen Chary About Entering. As a result of the difficult track, horsemen were hesitant in making entries and it was. nearly 3 oclock before to-morrows offering of six races was completed. Jockey T. McTaggart and W. Robertson were the first to come under the judicial ban, each suffering a five days suspension as a result of disobedience at the post in the first race. McTaggart only arrived here recently from Tijuana and it v as the initial mount he had at the meeting. Jefferson Livingston was in receipt of a cable during the afternoon from his London representative, Joseph Butters, stating that twelve of Livingstons yearlings were en route to America and would reach New York cm the Minnehaha about Jan. 10. Then-are ten colts in the- consignment, two by Polymeus. two by William the Third, two by Spearmint and two by Langibby. There are two fillies in the land. Originally Mr. Livingston purchased thirty-six sucklings, but disposed of twenty-four youngsters at the December Newmarket sale. The consignment due shortly represents the pick of the entire band. It is Mr. Livingstons intention to add i.i- m.ire English colts this year. His advices from Charleston, where- Koyal II. and the eighteen Kng-lish youngsters are wintering in charge of Trainer Louis Tauber, is that they are doing well. Sun God on the Shelf. Herman Brandt, who bought Sun God during the Saratoga meeting from Capt. E. B. Cassatt. will met have the use of that racer for some time as he wont amiss with a leg ailment shortly after reaching here. J. W. May xvas an arrival this morning from Louisville. He reports that his crack mare. Bay-lie rry Candle, and others in his stable are wintering in fine style. John W. Schorr has received advices from trainer b-orge Land, in charge of his extensive division of horses now being wintered at Louisville, that the crack. Harry Kelly, is going along finely and will, according to indications, develop into a grand three-year-old. Whirling Dun. carded to start in the third race, had to be exc used on ae-eouiit of a three-mile run -away this morning. After Miss Kruters victory she was adraaeed from an entered price of 1917.sh00 to 81,298 and bought with an advance bid, W. C. We-aiit d.-ing the bidding. Bullion lame- out of his race lame, but it is not thought that the trouble is more than local. After Talebearers victory be was advanced 00 freuii an catered pl-ie-e of a similar amount, but was bought in. W. Perkins did the bidding. Ioiit- fract was claimed out of the same race for 00 by G.
