The system of individual betting in vogue in the palm garden at the New Orleans track requires the money to be actually posted on every wager, and ii books can be ki pt. While the men who accept Wagen, the layers, as they are called, are experts at mental calculation, as a rule, the heat of them frequently get loaded up en u horse that goes over at a good price, and at one blow lose the bulk of their bank roll. And it is rare luck that the wagers taken by any layer balanct — in other words, that he has actually succeeded in making "hook" as the term used to be understood.
