CINCINNATI TROPHY DAY. XATONIAS CHIEF RACE FOR TWO-YEAR. OLDS FALLS TO MR. LONGS FREECUTTER. Leading Trio Noses Apart at tho End with Escoba. in Third Place Blind Baggage Wins a Fast. Race Manager Waite Defeats Hodge. Latonia, Ky., June 30. George J. Long, achieved a popular victory when his Freecutter wott-lhe rich Cincinnati Trophy, worth ,840 net to thet winner, from the best two-year-olds that could be" mustered in these parts. American, an extreme outsider, lauded in second place and the top weighted Escoba finished third. The finish was a thriller, the trio of placed ones landing noses apart, while the overwhelming favorite, Viva America, was far in the rear, having completely given up the struggle in the last eighth. Prior to that she had shown high speed and held a good lead, but when called on for her best effort, she quit badly. The winner raced in a forward position in close proximity of the leaders and when called on hard in the final drive, his weight concession stood him in good stead. Americas race was also a good one and he was going the fastest at the end. After Viva Aniercas retirement, it appeared as if Escoba would land the fixture, but he was overhauled in the last few strides. 1 Ha.nilton A.s effort was also a good one and, in landing fourth, he saved his starting and entry fee. amounting to 00. The victory for the Long colors in the race marked the second success he has scored in the rich stake since its inception. His former victory was gained by Watoma, the dam of Rudolfo. Todays splendid racing offering was responsible for the. presence at the track of an attendance of almost record proportion. The racing was enjoyable but the outsiders scored in most of the dashes. All the finishes were exciting and close In the three-quarters handicap. Blind Baggage, although carrying top weight, was an easy winner, with Squeeler in second place and Chalmers in front of the others. Blind Baggage showed his customary great speed and held on gamely under a hard drive. Jockey Stearns had to cancel his riding engagements after dismounting from Fox Ridge in the opening race, on account of illness. Jockeys Dish-mon and Grubcr were each suspended for the remainder of the meeting on account of misbehavior at the post. Belgian Trooper was acquired this afternoon by Knebelkahip and Howerton at private sale. Owners Departing for Other Points. A number of owners, will ship tomorrow to Grand Rapids for the racing there. Others will send consignments to Fort Erie for the racing which also begins there July 4. Honolulu has been acquired by W. Perkins at private sale. The Saratoga Racing Association has notified owners here not to ship there unless allotted stable room by Secretary A. McL. Earlocker. The mile and a sixteenth handicap fell to Manager Waite, but his victory was in the main due to the big advantage he had at the start, whereas Hodge, the overwhelming favorite, was practically left at the post, being unprepared and almost knocked down as a result of Manager Waite bumping into him. Ilodge closed an immense gap to land in second place, but the winner retained the lead from the start. Additional favorable advices relative to jockey Gooses condition were received this afternoon. The Doctors now feel hopeful that he will recover,, but it is unlikely that he will resume riding for some time. W. II. Baker this afternoon took over the contract on jockey Barrett that P. M. Civill held and will take the youngster to New York, where he will do the lightweight riding for the Baker stable. R. D. Williams, represented in the second race by Mike, claimed Impressive out of the race for ,000. Williams lost the filly via the claiming route on the occasion of her last start. II. Fink, who acquired County Court yesterday used him as a medium by which to claim Water Witch out of the last race for ,400. S. K.
