BREEDING ESTABLISHMENT FORMING Combs Brothers Increasing Their Stud Mr. Hancock Pleased with Recent Purchases. By T. B. Cromwell. Lexington, Ky., August 27. Lucas B. Combs and his brother . Brownell, sons of non. Leslie Combs, former Minister to Peru, and grandsons of the late Daniel Swigert, one of Americas famous turfmen, are buying a number of young mares for their Bel Air Stud and in all probability they will in the next .few years loom large in the ranks of American breeders of thoroughbred horses. They are responsible for what William Woodard tends the smartest yearling he ever trained. She Is the filly by Cunard Skyo. She was . bred on shares with E. R. Bradley and last December the Bradley Interest was iturchased by the young men, who sent the miss to the sales at New York in June arid got ,000 for her from Mrs. James AV. Decker, sister to Paul J. Rainey. who sent her to AAoodard to be trained. One morning this week she ran an eighth in 12 and set every one to commenting on her speed. The yearling fillies "Luke" Combs bought at Saratoga are intended eventually for. the stud,, as is the two-year-old AVince, by Peter ftaince AVinifred A., which he bought this week froiii AV. B. Miller. Black Tail, dam of Brookfield, Tarlton. P. and Zouave, by Disguise; second dain Ladasine. by Ladas; next dam Alleuineur, by St. Simon, and fourth dam the famous Parafine. Combs has booked to Arthur B. Hancocks Maiden Er-Ieight for next year. Still Buying Mares in England. Speaking of Mr. Hancock brings to mind that he is continuing his buying in England and is expecting another half-dozen mares over on a steamer due to dock today. He is much pleased, with the purchases he has made abroad, especially so with the young mare Merriment, by Sundridge-Marian Hood. Merriment is close kin to Sunbonnet, winner of the Kentucky Oaks. Sundridge is Suri-bonnets grandsire, and Marian Hood is Sunboil-nets dam. Sunstar, winner of the Two Thousaiid Guineas and Derby, likewise sire of Sunny Jane, winner of the Oaks in England this year, and also sire of Sky Rocket, considered the best two-year-old colt on the other side, is Sunbonnets sire. Sundridge is the sire of Sun Briar, winner of" the Saratoga Special for "Willis Sharpe Kilrher. Marian Hood was purchased during the winter or early spring by Messrs. Corrigan and McKinney for the Wickliffo Stud, but she is still in England. She has at foot a foal by Prince Palatine, and is bred to Sunstar. J. II. AVheelright, of Baltimore, close friend of Senator J. N. Camden, is the owner of a sister to Merriment. Auother mare which greatly pleases Mr. Hancock is Princess Caprice, by Marco sire of Omar Khayyam Royal Marriage, by Pietermaritzburg. She has a filly by Llaugibby. sire of Lanius, a good two-year-old which won recently at Saratoga.
