SOME OF THE EPSOM DERBY ENTRIES The English Oovernmont Represented Through Nominations Made By the National Stud. The "Calendar" is unusually interesting and quite of n pre-war character, for it is full of entries, including those for the Derby and Oaks or 1119, which, one might linve thought, would have exceeded 234 and 193 respectively, for there is no liability whatever unless the races are run and we have the abundant experience already of fixtures and entries being cancelled. Probably a fgood many people have lost track of racing and V nomination dates, and omitted to make entries which they had fully resolved on making.. I know that I did for one, having two or three fillies good enough to put in the Oaks, but it is now too late. 1 see Mr. Fairie lias entered Mani-lardo, brother to Gay Crusader, for the Derby and also Baal Gad, by Rayardo Jubilee. He has also entered two sons of Lemberg, dams Cliaunt and lady Vista respectively. Major Astor nominates two colts; Lord iinsil, by ltayardo Popinjay, and Buchan, by Sunstar Hamoaze. The dam of the latter of these was the first foal of Maid of the Mist and is by Torpoint, so that the colt is three-parts brother to Sunny Jane and Sky Rocket, with an additional guarantee of stamina. The National Stud enters three Koyal Itoalm colts, two White Kagles and Tracery, and it would be just as well to have the validity of these entries carefully discussed, for if they are valid the longstanding grievance about nominations being void on the death of the nominator can be got over at once, for entries might be made by limited companies and it would be easier for any owner to register such a company. A Case in Point. I have a special interest in this matter, for I remember in the days of the old Stud Company Ltd. Cobham, Messrs. Wcatherby would not accept entries from the company, their reason being that a company does not die, and it would therefore have an unfair advantage over other nominators. I confess I never thought tins reasoning good, but it was enforced at that period, and the largest shareholder in the company had therefore to make the entries in his own name, though Messrs. Wcatherby never went the lengtli of claiming that all the other shareholders and Debenture-holders should be registered as partners. Precisely the same reasoning would apply as against entries by the National Stud, which is not subject to the chances of mortality .which afreet other nominators, and it seems to me that the subject is one on which an authoritative decision might well be pronounced before any opportunity arises for an objection which might even lead to litigation. Major Astors fillies in the Oaks are Lady Baba, by Sunstar First Spear, which was herself exceptionally brilliant though erratic, and Sprocket, by Spearmint Winkipop. Mr. Fairie lias engaged Ciceronctta, by Cicero-Silesia, thus again bringing in a strong No. 1 combination with Galicin, for Cicero is a No. 1 horse, witli a good Blink Bonny line in his dam, and Silesia is by Spearmint 1 Galicia Blink Bonny.
