FINANCIAL RETURNS OF JOSEPH E. WIDENERS STABLE DURING- THE YEAR BOTH PLEASING AND SUBSTANTIAL : While no single representative in the stable stands out in the light in money won during the 1917 racing season, the large number of horses racing in the J. 15. Widener colors enabled the popular eastern turfman to make a creditable showing in a financial way. Twenty-nine horses were carried by the stable, and all bttt three of them had a part in bringing the total 1017 winnings up to 0,702, as compared with S,2S9 in 1910. The big increase in earnings over the previous year is attributable to the better success of the Widener horses in stake events. Naturalist, which heads the winning list, has three stakes to his credit, and lie finished second in another. His victories came in the Columbus Handicap, the Ellicott Handicap and the Blue and Gray Handicap at Laurel. He was a starter in the Prince George Handicap at the same track, but finished second to Ticket, Skibbercen fell but little short of Naturalists record in earnings. He was a starter in a number of the eastern steeplechase stakes and finished first in two of them the L. Stuart Wing Memorial Cup Handicap at Piping Rock and the Brook Cup Handicap at Belmont Park. In the United Hunts Double Event Steeplechase first part, at Belmont Park Terminal, he finished second and was awarded third money in the Winfield Steeplechase Handicap at Aqueduct and the Corinthian Steeplechase Handicap at Belmont Park. Expectation and Chiclet also were useful performers in the Widener string. The former won the Grand National Steeplechase Handicap at Belmont Park and had three seconds and a third in four other steeplechase stakes. Chiclet won the Edgemere Handicap at Aqueduct, finished second in the Belmont Park Autumn Handicap and third in both the Queens Count Handicap at Aqueduct and the Manhattan Handicap at Belmont Park. Pickwick, another Widener stake winner, was successful in the Carrollton Handicap at Laurel. Following is the 1917 record of the stable: Horse. Col. and Sex. A. Pedigree. 1st. 2d. 3d. Won.
