CUDGEL WILL BE READY EARLY 3. K. X. Ross Great Colt Quite Forward in His Training — Bonnie Dance Fast One. Warm de Grace. Md.. April *.— If any man has Mj.t doubt that J. K. L. Ross Cudgel will be ready to fill his engagements iu the Susijuehauna am 1jiiladclphia Handicaps, that will Im- decided at Havre de Grace in tie- course of the Harford Agri-cultural and Breeders Associations spring meeting, lie has but to see the sou of Broomstick — Eugenia Burch gallop. Twice since II. G. B-dwcll brought the Ross l-orscs here from Yarrow Brae Farm Cudgel has taken up his weight and worked halves in -IN seconds. He has made a profound impression on the eastern trainers who have seen him gallop at the Harford Comity track. His action is smooth and his teni|KT is perfect. Bed well let him have plenty to i at at Yarrow Brae through the winter, but kept him galloping steadily over the sandy roads of Howard County, and it is because of this judicious work that Cudgel is mi well advanced. Bonnie Bailee seems to be the most forward of the English -bred three-year-olds of the Ross establishment. He stuck with Cudgel, stride for stride, when ltedwell worked the pair together, and it locked as though he could have stayed with tie-American -bred colt ind finitely. Bonnie Bance is a close-coupled, short-backed colt, heavy -topped and close to th-- ground, a weight packer if there ever was one. He won the Phoenix Plat«- iu a field of twenty-odd fast youngsters at Phoenix lark. Dublin, last summer, and. although the distance of tile Phoenix Plate was only five -eighths of a mile. Bonnie Bance ran from behind like a colt that would stay. He is being pointed for the Wilmington. Havre de Graces only apaeW for three -ycar-olds exclusively, iu which lie is entered with "his stable companions. Hillhanipton. Foreground. Com Exchange. Wigstoue. Canso and Althea. If he makes good iu the Wilmington he will probably be trained for the Preakness at Pinilico. Wigstone. a son of Bavardo. seems Jo lie the stable choice for the Preakness. and he is, distinctly, a Derby type. He is a splendidly quartered horse of fine length and clean, muscular legs, a rich bay ill color. He started oulv twice bjst year and was seeond to BAmade in "his last attempt. Hillhanipton. a sou of William Rufus. is more of the English type, which is to say he is higher from the ground and lighter of build. Fitx-williaui. Mr. Ross l«-st English-bred four year-old. is a strapping chestnut of fine substance and quality. Fitzvvilliaiu. if the plans of the stable do not misearry. is to lie the companion runner of Cudgel in the various long-distance races of the coming season. Bcdwcllv American juni|iers Sixty-four. Early Eight. Dr.nuati-t and Welsh King and his three foreign- bnii f« n.-ers are schooling handsomely over the Havre de «;raee course and the cross-country education of Cadillac has begun. Bedwell thought one or t«i.-.- through the wiuter of putting Dam-roM-h through the field, but he has changed his mind.
