June 11. That it will Is- the most satisfactory and successful season of soring racing in the history of Douglas Park track, is foreshadowed by the splendid character of tlM- racing material already available and the wonderful interest which is being manifested in the meeting so far in advance of its opening. Douglas Park racing has been constantly growing in public favor with each passing year, thanks to the progressive isdicies of Manager Haehmeister, who has been given a free hand by the owners of the property in the conduct and management of the plant. Mr. Haehmeister is a thorough believer in the potency of valuable races as an uphiiilder of raring as a great popular amusement and this explains why the most valuable of all American races for horses three years old and over, the ."i. MNI added Kentucky Handicap, will have a place in the Douglas Park program this soring. It will be the sixth running of this valuable race, which is scheduled for decision this spring on Saturday. June 1. In pursuance of the general polhy of liberality in purse distribution, wheh has done so much t make Douglas Park |H pular during the past few years, both with horsemen and the general race-going public, many other valuable races are scheduled to be run during the meeting, throughout which the high-class horses in training in Kentucky will l.e catered to on an unprecedented scale, with the object of sottii.g a new standard for high-class racing. In addition to the candidates in trainiag for this great race in Kentucky, the Kentucky Handicap will attract some notable horses from the east. including Commander J. K. L. Boss* great four -year-old Cudgel, whose recent victories in Maryland indicate that he may turn out to lie the horse of the year. Cudgel is a great favorite with Kentucky racegoers, as a natural result of his remarkable feats on Kentucky tracks last year as a three-year-old in the colors of John W. Schorr. II. G. Bedwell. who purchased Cudgel from Mr. Schorr last fall for Commander Boss, one of the wealthiest men ill Canada, has already announced his intention of shipping Cudgel west for the Kentucky Handicap and it is not unlikely that I lie great Omar Khayyam will also come to take part in the rata. Kscob.i. Sewell Combs. Manager Wait" and King Gorin are among the Kentucky candid. ites for this race that have lieen showing winning form at Lex-ington and it is likely that all five of iiiese horses will Is- numbered among the field thai w.ll go to the ixist to contest for the rich prize 011 the afternoon of June 1. RANCHER IN GOOD FORM. The racing of the next week or so will bring into prominence other candidates, including ucli a notable one as George M. K.xcept for some minor details incidental to the opening, little remains to Is* done at Douglas Park in preparation for the meeting. The plant, which by reason of its natural beauty has come to be known as "the Saratoga of the West." presents an epeetafly attractive appaararata just now. in all its springtime freshness and the track itself is in suiierh condition, as shown by numerous fast trials of iiorses that have been taking place over it ff late. The stables are practically filled light now with the horses that will take part in the meeting, the few stalls that remain empty Is-ing under reservation for horses coming from other points, for which allotments have lieen made. As usual, some of the horses that will race at Douglas Park will lie quartered at Chun-hill I low ns. just as the reverse happens while the Churchill Downs meeting is on. Jointly, the two tracks have accomodations for an enormous number of hordes, which is one reason why Louisville patrons of racing have the opportunity of enjoying such high-class sport as has been the rule here in recent years. The presence of so many horses enables the racing secretary to fill high-class races at all times. In common with the other Kentucky tracks. Douglas Park will contribute to the magnificent fund of 0O.0 »0 which the racing interests of Kentucky have pledged to raise for the Bed Cross fiiiel this year. It will lie no inconsiderable amount that the Douglas Park management will contribute and every patron of the track this spring will indirectly help to swell the total and thus aid the worthiest charity in the world without assuming any direct burden. a
