May 11.— Major August Belmont was at Belmont Park this morning looking over the institution and his horses in charge of Samuel Hil.lrcth. Things are beginning to shape up around the track for Ike opening of the season. Supt. Pel* is having the grandstand and club house polished up. in fact general house leaning has been Matted in p.-cparatioii for the opening. Hildreth brought his horses out «1 ■heat the usual time and showed them in ca ring exercises. Lucullite was sent I mile and mi eighth in 1 :•" ». the first mile in 1:40 easily. This hers • is in admirable condition and is lH-ing methodically prepared for his coming engagements, the chief of which are the Belmont and Withers. It is the general opinion he will be as fit as hands can make him when he is sent to the |H.st. Main of those who have watched Ins work believe he will eventually prove the best three year -old of the year and predicting it will take a wonderful horse to beat him. Mr. Belmont watched his promising two-year-old colt Mad Hatter work a half mile in fifty-one seconds. It is said that this is the liest two year old in the Belmont establishment. Another celt that Major Belmont watched with considerable interest is Alibi, the Tracery — Ami-citia colt which looks like a fair son of Major Bel-. Meats great sire Traocrv. Alibi went wrong last year and was never started. He covered a mile this morning in easy fashion in 1 : IS. in a canter.
