. J. E. MADDEN WINS FIRST RACE IN CUBA Irene Carries His Colors to Victory Senor Diaz Shows Another "Baby" Winner. HAVANA. Cuba. February 4. John K. Madden .scored his first victory here when Irene, sent to the post by Maxey Hirsch. defeated Jeffery in the fourth race, a sprint at five and a half furlongs, in the fast time of 1:05. It was a keen contest all tha way. Irene was forced to run on the outside of Jeffery, but at the eighth post Kelsay went to work on Irene, which lasted long enough to win by a length. A. II. Diaz showed a promising two-year-old in Grnyssinn. by Hessian Dorothy Cray, which, with Hill Knapp in the saddle, captured the baby race that began the days proceedings. Williams Bros. siK-edy mare Impressive ran a fast three-quarters of a mile to win the second race, while Surplice and Fustian staged a stub-Imrnl.v contested stretch duel in the third race, the outcome of which was in doubt until the final strides, the first mentioned being awarded the decision by the smallest of margins. C. Howard, on Dimitri, stole a big lead at the start of the fifth race, at a mile, and the old ;elding hung on to beat Kay Spences "Woodthrush by hnlf a length in a driving finish. The best finish of the afternoon came with the running of the final race, the first three horses Itobert L. Owen, Chillum and Bierman finishing in the order named and only noses apart.
