OUTSIDERS HOME IN FRONT : ; Heavy Fair Grounds Track Brings Path Racing Back Again. , Pickwick Defeats Korbly and Blackie Daw in the Main Race of the Day. NEW ORLEANS. La., February 4. With the exception of the Quickstep Handicap, at five and a half furlongs, to which a purse of ,000 was added . and which was contested by a quartet of fast ones, the remainder of this afternoons card left nothing to enthuse over, and the running of four of the dashes brought in form somersaults, the winners in their last essnys having been beaten decisively, under conditions practically similar to. those governing tliis afternoon. One of the chief form flops was that of Ninety Simplex, which was given confident backing this afternoon and showed a high order of speed from the start to Ultimately win easily; but his success was mainly, attributable to the attempted rough riding of Connelly, who forced Tito into the deepest part of the track in the stretch. But the interference was ignored by Mooney, the rider of Tito, who failed to lodge a claim of foul against the offender. Whether it would have been allowed is problematical, as the officials were not called to rule on the incident. W. C. Clancys Pickwick again figured in a. winning performance when he accounted for the feature, and this time triumphed over his former conqueror, Korbly, to which lie was also conceding weight. Pickwick aiid Korbly absorbed most of the betting attention on the race, but near the close there Was a panicky splurge on Blnckie Daw. which caused his quotation to come- tumbling. Blackie Daw had. no mishajis..,in the nice, but the best -be could do was to land in third place. W. F. Kuelelkamp uncovered a smart looking miss in his Ivan the Terrible filly Pop Eyes, which proved herself thoroughly at home . in the going aud led Oleaster and Rainbow Division to the finish. Paul Connelly ran in his best form this afternoon and accounted for the purse in the second race after a spirited drive with Sosins and Early Sight. Searpin II. showed the most speed in the third race, and tinder "Rowans tricky tactics managed to outstay Batliilde, with the weakly ridden Eraiitnua landing third place. Kowans attempt at rough riding in the stretchbrougkt him a suspension of six days by the stewards. PETIT BLEUS SHOWING BAD. x Bombast proved best in the fifth- race and succeeded in outstaying the suddenly improved Ben Uampson. Petit Bleus showing iu this,, was lwd and she was beaten off. The final nice found Hondo master or his opposition and he led all the way. with the suddenly improved Adelante pressing hint hard at the finish and Luther coining third. Chris Martin, who had las license revoked es a result of the disgraceful showing of Kentucky Boy during tiie first week of the Fair Grounds meeting, had his license restored this afternoon. Judge Murphy holding him sufficiently punished for his alleged lack of attention to his calling in Iiavim; sent Kentucky Boy to the post in an apparently unfit condition. W. Perkins iias parted with Trusty, disposing of him to W. Cain for 00. Jockey Barrett was suspended for four days by the starter for disobedience at the post iu the Iast race. Jockey Elisor has changed his mind about" going cast and will remain and ride here. Secretary J. B. Campbell of Oaklawu. Hot Springs, is distributing . blanks to .owners .heru for stable application and is receiving more requests for stall space than can conveniently be handled. The rules of the Kentucky State Kacing Commission will govern the racing at Hot Springs except where they conflict with the track rules. The innovation of charging 0 for jockeys and trainers licenses will also be put into effect this year at the "Oaklawu track. This was the second ladies day at the track, but the threatening weather had much to do with reducing the usual large attendance on these occasions. With additional rain in prospect it will be some days before the track again borders on fust: meantime "path" racing will be the order and forin leversals inevitable. Joseph McLennan has posted a notice advising horsemen who intend to race on tracks under the jurisdiction of the Jockey Club to apply for licenses and register their colors without delay.
