ANCIENT HISTORY OF CHESTER CUP In 1810 Geu. Grosvenor gave a cup valued at seventy sovereigns and joined Sir T. G. Egerton in another wortli sixty sovereigns. The city contributed, too. and to give more extension still to that wise jiolicy a stake was devised in 1824 to stand in lie name of the tradesmen of Chester, who con-irinuted 100 guineas. There were, later on, pro-liosals to add wane cheese to the bounty, and if the good traders of Chester had had their way the winner of the cup might have carried off a ton of that delicious commodity.
