RED RED ROSE TRIUMPHS : Proves Herself Queen of New Orleans Two-Year-Olds. : l. . Five Hot Favorites Beaten- Sophia Gatewood Wins Her Annual Fair Grounds Race. - NEW ORLEANS, La., February 27. The Crescent City Junior Champion Purse of ,000 over tlio half mile route was contested by the best two-year-olds in these parts, and resulted in a victory for Mrs. Payne Whitneys Red Red Rose, trained by Mose Goldblatt. She began well, but when approaching the first turn,, and when OBrien, on Minute Man, took the latter over to the rail, Murphy at once took her back sharply and later on brought Red Red Rose wide, with the result that she lost much ground and had to use her best speed to overhaul Tlielma E., which had sprinted into the lead. Thelma E., holding on gamely, outstayed Minute Man. The youngsters represented the cream of the two-year-olds here, and Red Red Roses victory makes her the best youngster developed so far in these parts. She has been engaged liberally by her" trainer in stakes offered oh the Kentucky tracks,- where she will be shipped following tho Hot Springs meeting. Improved weather was responsible for an outpouring of the full force of the racing enthusiasts in these parts. The track was still heavy but drying, and if no more rain falls it will be fast for Saturday and the remaining" days of racing here. Favorites were beaten in steady, fashion throughout the afternoon, the strongest of fenders being Bathilde in the opener, Onico in the second. Assume in the third race and Margery in the fifth. Red Red Rose, Don Dodge and Hondo were the successful choices. , - -w Green Grass, running in the colors of B. J. Bran-non and witli Connelly in the saddle, raced to his best form and won in a canter. Connelly also rode Ninety Simplex to victory in the" second race. Marie Miller, with blinkers on, showed a decided improvement in her running in the sprint race that brought out; some of the best in this .division here and won in runaway style. Sophia, Gatewood.whichJs an annual "good tiling" here, again made good for her connections by winning easily, , and Barretts action vin forcing tin; others wide on the stretch trim while astride Mari-anao" enabled Don Dodge to "save mucli ground and win easily. The last nice went to Hondo, witli Medusa in second place. The ten days program, book for the Jefferson Park racing was distributed this afternoon by secretary McLennan. " The purse distribution calls for an outlay of ,900 by the association daily for the seven races. No purse will be of less than 00, witli a 1919.sh00 purse daily to serve. as features. Bathilde was claimed by Smith and Farrar from Crippen and Frazier in the first race. This is tho fourth time that Bathilde has been claimed in three weeks. R. L. .Rogers will ship Diversion and others in Ills charge to Oaklawn next Friday. Airnat, which, is now trained by James Arthur, was excused from starting by the judges on the statement of-his. trainer that the colt was ailing. James F. Cuminings came out of his race in a bad way and will probably not be in condition to start again for some time. Mayor Martin Behrman has promised the winner of the Martin Behrman Handicap a handsome silver cup and will be on hand to witness the race, which will be run the last day of this week.
