BIG CROWD SEES JAMAICA RACING Bonnie Mary Suffers Her First Defeat of the Year Naturalist Takes Excelsior Handicap NEW YORK N Y June 14 It is the largest crowd ever at Jamaica was the remark of Senator Reynolds as he glanced over the crowded gathering of at least 17000 patrons of racing attracted to the popular Long Island track today to witness the decision of an inviting program of which the Rose dale for twoyearolds and the Excelsior Handi ¬ cap for older horses were the principal features Both events resulted in surprises as Bonnie Mary the acknowledged twoyearold champion of the east was defeated by Toujours from the stable of J AV McClelland in the Rosedalc while Star Master fell victim to the ernitic Naturalist in the Excel ¬ sior Naturalist took the lead in the first eighth of the race and was never again headed though he was inclined to sulk in tlie last fifty yards but managed to hold on to win by a length Star Master was always within close range but he was fortunate to withstand a threatening challenge from Boniface and Corn Tassel also threatened Roamer ilid not run to his usual form though he hung on well for a mile The time of the race equaled the track record made by Roamer and George Smith in respectivelyThe 1907 and 1918 respectively The defeat of Bonnie Mary was a shock to those who have been praising her good qualities She took the lead early and was well in front to the eighth post where Lady Bnunmcl threatened on the jnside and Toujours came along with giant strides on the outside Ensor saw his danger and went to work on Bonnie Mary but she could not withstand the fast closing Toujours which just got np in time to marginsAll win by the smallest of margins All interesting finish marked the running of the opening race in which Ral Parrs colt Ireland the overwhelming favorite met defeat by inches The winner was Fair Colleen carrying the silks of the Brighton Stable She led all the way but was doing her best at the end to withstand the belated challenge of Ireland The latter was pinched back at the start losing much ground but fought his way through next to the rail in the uretch and after a magnificent display of speed just failed to overtake Fair Colleen ColleenA A big field of ordinary threeyearolds con ¬ tested the second race and Mahony easily triumphed showing marginOn the way throughout by a safe margin On Friday F E Goldsmith claimed Who Cares 1300 nnd the Kentucky Stable claimed Frederick the Great for 2800 2800AAr AAr T Wilkinson has bought eight horses from A 1C Macombers stable He purchased AVar Rocket and Fell Swoop some days ago and both did so well under the AVilkinson colors that he bought six more These are AVar Strength War Paint AAar Smoke AVar Spirit AVar Cap threeyearolds and Tracksend a fiveyearold They will all be trained by Lewis Garth
