THE PORTER EASILY BEATS SIR BARTON Slippery Elm Another Favorite to Meet Defeat Disqualification in Third Race. HAVRE DE GRACE, Mil., September. 24, Todays racing at the Harford Association track was over a heavy track and was replete with surprises. This was particularly true iu the Record Purse, in which The Porter beat the crack three-year-old Sir Rarton. It was not the hitters defeat so much that was surprising, but rather the easy fashion iu which the McLean colt accomplished Ids task. The two raced together until the far turn, where The Porter drew away easily and was only cantering at the end five lengths in the lead of the Kentucky Derby winner. Sir Barton was hard ridden throughout, but could never overtake the winner. Dodges easy defeat of Slippery Elm in the following race was another blow to the talent, as Slippery Elm was heavily backed, but could never overtake the old Jim Gaffney horse, which right now is at his best. The third race resulted in a disqualification. Kirsties Cub being set back for impeding General in the last hundred yards. President Thomas C. McDowell of the Thoroughbred Horsemens Association, bus called a meeting fcr Friday noon at the elublrouse at Havre de Grace race track. All of the horsemen are invited to attend. Eugene Wayland left for Aqueduct this morning with the W. J. Salmon string of,, racers,. . J. W. May sent his string in the same car. j t Jockey W. Knapp Is beginning to feel" the effects of reducing and intends to give up riding. He plans to purchase about three racers and ship them to Cuba to race at the. Oriental- Park meeting. G. Sv. Forman claimed Ballad after the latter won the seventh race yesterday.. He also claimed the plater Romeo, but later ou during, the afternoon sold" him back to his former owner. Firing Line was also claimed after he was beaten. E. C. Griffith secured him for ,500.. J. F. Sweeney shipped a division of his stable, including Hauberk, to Latonia, and C. F. Clements sent the plater Rapid Day along with the consignment. They will finish out the fall season ou the Kentucky tracks and at the conclusion of the meeting in that section they will be sent to New Orleans. Jockey R. McCrann accompanied the stable to Kentucky.
