00,000 FOR FAIR PLAY i t i Sale of Noted Stallion to G. A. Cochran Now Seems Certain. L 1 W. K. Vanderbilt, with His Trainer and Jockey, Arrives from France. NEW YORK, N. Y"., November 19. IMr. Gif-ford A. Cochran is not now the owner of the celebrated stallion Fair Play, the fifteen-year-old son of Hastings Fairy Gold, in all probability he will be in a few days, unless present negotiations fall through. .The price for Fair Play is 00,000, with the condition that he remain in Kentucky and that Major Belmont retain the privilege of his service for ten mares each year for three years, which is equivalent to 0,000, the stud fee of Fair Play being ,000. While the change of. ownership has not yet transpired, it s only a question of conditions, the price being satisfactory. Fair Play is the sire of the champion two-year-old Man o War, the winner of nine out of ten races this year, as well as the sire of many other notable horses, including Mad Hatter, Stromboli and other stake winners. Last years records do not show Fair Play well up on the list of leading sires,- but this year he is a close second to Star Shoot,- niainljr..throughtlie.. efforts -of Man o! War and Mad Hatter. When racing Fair Play just happened, the same year as did the undefeated Colin. In every race they met Colin beat him, both as a two.and three-year-old, but Fair Play was probably the best of the others of that period, and in any other year wouldj.no doubt have been considered one of the great horses of the American turf. Entries for the Westchester stakes, which close tomorrow, are coming1 in about as usual, according to official count. "We expect to be a trifle short," said secretary Earloeker, "owing to the presence of Man 6 War in the three-year-old and three-year-old and over events, but the nominations are not falling off nearly as much as anticipated." Mr; W. K. Vanderbilt, his trainer,, William Duke, and his jockey, Frank ONeill, are expected here late this evening on the steamship La France. The La France is one day late. Trainer and jockey come here on a vacation and to spend the winter holidays at their homes. Neither Duke or ONeill have been here for several years, though Mr. Vanderbilt was home at intervals during the war. All anticipate returnng in time for the spring, racing; season in France. " , F. R. HITCHCOCK BACK FROM FRANCE. Mr. Frank Hitchcock, one of the stewards cf -the Jockey Club, is back frohi France, and was" in "attendance at the Jockey Club meeting yesterday. He was away about two months looking over his racing property and interests in France. He has three horses in training there and has already wqn three races. Mr. Hitchcock reports things are gradually resuming normal conditions in a racing way, with future prospects quite- bright: " r A Stud Book, issued under the auspices of the breeding bureau of the Jockey Club, for half-breeds has been opened so that foals sired by thoroughbred stallions, but not themselves eligible to registration as thoroughbreds may be registered and a " record kept of them. " AH foals sired by a horse which is registered in either the American or English Stud Book are eligible to registration in this Stud Book. Mrs. Herbert Wadsworth is the president of this organization, known as the Genesee Valley Breeders Association, Avon, Livingston County, N. Y. The value of this half-bred foal registration lies in the fact that hereafter the purchaser of any half-bred foaled in 1919 or later will really know what he is buying when the person offering the horse for sale can product the certificate of registration. In the past it has too often happened that an animal has been accredited to a stallion which in fact was not its sire. Following are the lists of trainers and jockeys who were granted licenses at yesterdays Jockey Club meeting: Trainers Henry Bondy, Harvey Boyle, M. L Devlin. C. Dewitt, J. W. Dayton, J. J. Flanigan, Harvey J. Ford, Ike Garson, W. B. Johnson, H. J. Kennedy. Newell McMcans, H. Newton, Thomas OBrien, E. Sweeney, M. Trotter, C. D.,. Tudor, Arthur Willoughby, Mack Welsch and E. Williams. Jockeys David Armstrong, Win. Boganowski, Conrad Brudcr, Francis Bryson, Gordon O. Carpenter, Clyde Gordon, Kinsey Jordan, E. Lomas. Frank. Lux, Robert Mason, W. Murphy, J. Nucclo, Frank Reilly, Martin Schwartz and William Taylor.
