STAKE WINNING JOCKEYS OF 1919 J. LOFTUS FAR SURPASSES ALL OTHER RIDERS IN - BOTH THE NUMBER AND VALUE OF STAKE FEATURES WON DURING THE YEAR While Jockey J. Loftus lias never headed the list of American riders during any year since his debut on the turf, lie. -lias nevertheless been considered one of tin b:vst, by-some the peer, of all of our later-day riders. The fact is that the end of each year-finds Lortus with as high if not higher percentage -or winning mounts than those who may, because of riding more frequently during the year, have a greater total of winning mounts to their credit. This is biit year no exception in that respect; in another matter, that of stake Winning jockeys, Loftus tops them nil, both in the number of stakes Won and the monetary value ot them. With but a few exceptions nil. the richest turf plums of the year fell to horses ridden by Loftus. Principally because he rode Sir Barton in the Kentucky-Derby and Preakness Stakes and Man o War in the Hopeful, Futurity and other stakes was. Loftus able to place to his credit the immense sum of .93,815 in stake -winnings, over twice as much as to the credit of any other rider this voar. L. Fator is second to Lortus in that respect, his Av.nning of .the La tenia Championship on Mad Hatter being chielly responsible for his high position. The veteran Bill Knapp conies next, closely followed by O. Kummcr. An astonishing and curious fact is revealed in this list of stake winning jockeys, jockey C Robinson, the leading American rider of 1919, having only three stake events to his credit "throughout the whole, year.
