NEGOFOL WILL AID BREEDING E F. SIMMS FRENCH PURCHASE A NOBLY BRED HORSE OF STAYING PERFORMANCE AND PEDIGREE HIS FINE RACING AND ANCESTRY IN DETAIL By E X I LE Not content with his purchase of the British-bred Prince Palatine, Mr. Edward Simms has now secured unto himself the French sire Negofol, which, as is the Prince, is also of St. Simon descent, his sire being the Cesarewitch winner of 1S94, Childwick. Negofol, which is now fourteen years of age, won on the French turf Prix Harfleur, Prix Seine et Marne, Prix Fontainebleau and Prix du Jockey Club French Derby, beating Union and Mr. Vanderbilts son of Halma, Oversight. Negofol also during his racing career proved his class by finishing ahead of the Grand Prix winner Verdun, Le Sagittaires good son Ossran and the Prix Royal Oak winner Aveu. Negofol is, of course, chiefly known to American bloodstock breeders and turfmen as the sire of that good horse Hourless, and in addition to this he is the sire of the French Derby winner of last year Tchad, and of that good stayer Juveigneur. Negofol, it may be observed, comes of a great staying line. Childwick, his sire, beat Ormc for the Limekiln Stakes as a three-year-old, and the following year won the two and one-quarter mile Cesarewitch. Childwick early in life was sold to France, where he became, in addition to Negofol, the sire of" that really good race mare La Camargo, winner of Prix de Diane and twice winner of Prix du Conscil Municipal, and of Clyde; also winner of Prix de Diane and second to the colt Fiiiassour for both the Prix du Jockey Club and Grand Prix de Paris. St. Simon Plaisanterie, each of them of exceptional distance going merit. Is it surprising that a Cesarewitch winner and unusually successful sire should come from this union? Surely a genuine stayer was the probable result, for no one ever knew the limit of St. Simons capabilities as a race horse, and Plaisanterie, one of the best race Allies ever bred in France, which, on being sent across the channel, won both the big autumn handicaps, the Cambridgeshire and the Cesarewitch. Plaisanterie was a member of the Contessina branch of the stout-staying No. 19 family, from which also come the French Derby winner Sea Sick, the Grnd Prix winner St. Christopho, .that good race mare Poetess and the king of the cup horses, Isonomy. Flaisanterics sire, Wellingtonia, is of tho Orlando line, but the sands of time seem to have about run down for the Orlandos in England. But in France still there is life, and in this country, on-account of the excellence .of the Domjuos, .everything points., to Orlando holding on for some time to come. Plais- that line race mare Poetess", which was bjTrocadero, son of Sladiatcurs sire Monarque, which won the Paris Cup and many another good race in his homeland, and, on being sent across the channel, scored a victory in tho three-mile Alexandra Plate on Ascots classic heath. All of this is staying blood, and Negofol, therefore, may be looked to to sire colts and Allies well able to hold their own in races run over a long distance of ground. Ncbrouse, dam of Negofol, is by Hoche, and still more staying blood here comes in, for Hoches sire is the St. Legcr, Ascot Gold Cup and Cesarewitch winner, Robert the Devil, and Hoches dam, Hermita, by Hermit, was also the dam of Sailor Prince, sire of Sibola and winner of the Cambridgeshire, and Sailor Prince yet another member of the No. 19 family. Nebuleuse, granddam of Negofol, is by Manoel, No. 19 also, son of Flageolet, Rayon dOrs sire, from Vestale, by Patricien, by Monarque. Hows thisV Two crosses of Monarque and three 19s right on top of his pedigree, bred to sire stayers. So runs the pedigree to Navarre, by Don Carlos, yet another son of Monarque, as is Negofol himself, a member of the No. 17 family, the Dacia branch of which is responsible for the appearance of the Grand Prix winner Rueil, and as far as my knowledge goes nd male member of this special brancli of the seventeen has ever before been bought for sire use in this country. Negofol, therefore, from this fact alone should meet with good success here as a sire, for, despite all opinions to the contrary, as turf history is my guide, outcrossing is the life and soul of successful bloodstock breeding. Also Ncgofols outside number, 17, is no bar to his success, for before this all of us have seen Sir Modrcd head the winning sire list and recall the excellence of Sovereign as a sire, and also bear in mind the recent successes of Macdrr.ald in France, and in the old days of- Pantaloon in England. Therefore, understand that Negofol, outbred as he is from American stock, will confer general and lasting benefit on the bloodstock breeding interests of the United States.
