ODD CAREER OF VULCANITE Vulcain Colt Has Raced for Three Years and Beat Good Horses But Is Still a Maiden. W. F. Poisons Vulcanite, a four-year-old, by Vulcain Single Shot, by Star Shoot, made his initial appearance of 1920 in a race at Fort Erie on the closing day of the meeting, and his name among the starters recalled the odd career of that horse. He has never won a race, although he has defeated In races horses which have at one time or another been placed in the championship class. There is no explanation for this oddity about Vulcanite unless it be the horse lacks heart, or is just one . of those temperamental thoroughbreds which refuses to win. He surely does not dack speed. Vulcanites record as a two and three-year-old shows tliat he was generally "knocking at tlie door;" biit was unable to win for some cause or another. He has been near the front at the finish . in both stakes and purse races, but is still a maiden. His first start as a two-year-old was at Lexington May 3, 1918, when he finished third to Mack Garner and Bugle Call. He was third again :the same year. May 28, at Douglas ;Park to Sen-nings Park and Cacambo. In his other two starts as a two-year-old he was unplaced. In his three-year-old form great things were expected of Vulcanite by his Buffalo owner, but he failed. In his first start at Lexington, April 20, 1919, he was only leaten a half length by Iwin in a purse race. He next finished fourth in tlie Kentucky Derby, won by Sir Barton. In this race he beat such good colts as Senniugs Park, Be Frank, Regalo, Eternal and others. Vulcanite was fourth in the Latonia Derby, Juni 7, won by Be Frank. He again beat Eternal. He was third to Pastoureau and Clermont at Latonia June 13 and second to Dodge, at the same track, June 10. He was only beaten a neck and a half length by Pictor and Welshmans Folly at Saratoga August 14. In the Lexington Cup, September 17, Vulcanite was only beaten a neck, and a head by Piedra, and Wickford. Tlie time for tlie mile and one-half was 2:32, making a new murk for the old association track at Lexington, which has been run over since 1820. War God and Legal beat him a head and a neck in a purse race at Latonia, September 24. Then in the Twin City Handicap, run October 4 at Latonia, one mile and five-eighths, he finished third, to Stockwell and Under Fire in track record tinif-. Tlie race was run in 2:45..
