GIANTS OF THE RACE TRACK Meeting of Man o War and Sir Barton at Kenilworth Park on Tuesday Engrossing the Interest of the World of Racing The near-by meeting of Man o-War and Sir Barton, in what amounts to a match race, has evoked ,a degree of widely-spread interest akin to that which pervaded this nation when American Eclipse, representing the North, met Henry, championing the South, oyer the Long Island Union Course nearly a century ago. There are reasons. Two horses of great fame and prowess are to meet for the first time. The racing public dearly loves a match between such equine celebrities. Here" the-horses are also to contest for the greatest sum of money ever raced for. That is another compelling attraction to draw enthusiasts from all directions. When American Eclipse and Henry met there were no railroads, and it is a fact that thousands set forth frcm their far distant homes on horseback or in carriages to travel, in many cases, for a month to six weeks to take part in the supreme excitement attendant on the decision of a great interactional race. No such self-sacrifice is now called for in order to view the glorious contest between the two fleet-footed creatures destined to clash, rain or shine, next Tuesday, but the urge that impelled the sporting pilgrims of long ago is as strong today and will bring thousands to Kenilworth Park from all parts of this broad land by the more commodious and swifter means of present day traveling. Writers of that time narrated that probably 120,000 viewed the Eclipse-Henry racej which was quite liberal guessing. There will not be so many present when Man o War and Sir Barton meet, but there probably will be all that Kenilworth Park can provide room for. Canadian pride is tickled by the fact that Canadian enterprise secured this superlative racing attraction for a Canadian track and Canada alone can be relied upon to furnish a grand assemblage. As to the race, what can be said about it that has hot already been said? There are thousands who are sincere in believing that Man o War is the best race horse ever in action in this land or any other land. That is the intoxication of the hour. But Man o War is beyond controversy a wonderful racing machine. Still, if Man o War had not come when he did Sir Barton would now be on as lofty a pedestal in public estimation. He is a marvel of speed, stamina and bulldog tenacity. Truly, in him the marvel three-year-old is to measure strides with a marvel four-year-old, and wonderful" will be the good fortune of those who are to witness the noble strife impending. They will have something worth while to talk about for many a day to come. r MAN Oj WAR ... By EXILE ... , , ft Herewith I once ngnin present the, breeding of what is,-in my ;eMimjitjjji.t " Tftrftesi ffo do 1 2!ffi?Qiorsftj.2 -JJotbisT caiiW of;.any serious opposition he has had to overcome , in racing, hut rather from the manner in which "his races are won. If any apology be necessary for this repetition of the champions breeding.: I beg to state that my chief aim in doing so is to familiarize not only tlie breeders and turfmen of this country with the blood lines of this good horse, but also to have the breeders of other countries become better acquainted with the component parts of the big chestnuts pedigree. For here, as I see it, the golden opportunity to exploit the United "States as a country where good horses may be bred. You all remember the mouse trap story. Well, here is the best mouse trap. The world, therefore, is certain to beat a pathway to your door. The oft-put question "How good is Man o War?" and the almost invariable answer "The best horse in the world; there never was one like him." As to this, however, even.,though I have seen horses run both near and far, and good ones, too, I cannot say, for I have never seen him when really fit put to the crucial test. My own estimate of Man o Wars capabilities is that he is Stedfast over again, and Stedfast, you know, won twelve of Englands best races right oil the reel. Stedfust also is a chestnut, and a big one, too, and, when racing, had the same inexorable style of vanquishing his opponents, and this style the cause of my exalted opinion of Man o Wars merits. Why, he stole a length on me at Saratoga, up the back in the running of the Travers, and I in the center field, looking right at him, and never saw him do it. I wish that lie could be safely landed in England fit, well and thoroughly acclimated by next Ascot time to give my countrymen a taste of his quality in the Cup. I suppose it cant be done, but if such a thing were possible there would not be space enough on all Ascot Heath and Windsor Forest thrown in to accommodate the multitude. The amount of good such breeders as the late Mr. James R. Keene and Major August Belmont have done for the American turf is well nigh incalculable. Just cast your eye over the pedigrees of the big winners of the present season and see how many of them are bred up on a Nursery or a Castleton foundation. Fair Play, sire of the champion, is Nursery through and through, as is his dam, Mahubah, a ten-year-old daughter of the Nursery imported triple crown winner Rock Sand. The name of Rock Sand echoes round the world. Rock Sand is known to the Australians through the excellence as sires of his sons, October and Sands of the Orient. In England his name is not forgotten. Rock Flint and Rochester are too busy for that; Argentina has gobbled up Tracery and his son, The Panther. Qnelle est Belle won the Prix de Diane in France, and Rock Sand, in this country, topped the list of winning, brood mare sires last year, the produce of his daughters winning over 25,000, niyl he once again this season bids fair to assume the leadership, being only Just behind Meddler. It is a fact that certain strains of blood mean more to a pedigree than do others. There never was and probably never will he a name which means as mush to a pedigree as does that of Macaroni. Glencoe, I suppose, is the nearestapproach to it, and of this Macaroni strain the champion boasts two crosses by way of Halliards daughter. Mavis, and his great granddam, Macgregors daughter, Mizpah. I am sure I do not know what are his owners present intentions concerning Man o Wars future racing career, but I do know that the necessity of well-endowed weight-for-age races over cup distances was never more apparent. As matters now stand, Man o War next year will be ubsplutely, if kept in training, in the hands of the handlcapper. No one, however, envies this accomplished gentleman his job, and that this is not all as it should be admits of no argument. For if ever bloodstock, as bred in this country, is to obtain proper recognition abroad, weight-for-age races over cup courses must be held, such as the Gold Cup at Ascot, to enable .all and sundry to form u true estimate of a horses racing merits. Some one asked of me recently, "Is Man o War bred to a success as a sire?" Of course he Is. It is no trouble at all to answer this. Granted, then, his ability as a race horse, his pedigree, every line of it, is suggestive of sire success, and he probably will be best suited by mares of Flying Dutchman, Le Sancy, Hermit, especially through Voter, Star Shoot and Broomstick descent, and for such mating I am able, in every instance to advance n sound and logical reason. . t "Australian ....11 J West Australian 7M ltl .....J Emilia 11 E chestnut, 1S85 j Aerolite Lexington , 12 H fSpendthrift ,. tPlorine H Blue Ruin or J King Tom 3 E 50 Cinderella J Tomahawk ...13 Mincemeat 3 H S I Brown Bread Ki E M.1MI1 w J -Jianna 1 Tartlet .....til E SI I 1 J Rockwell 3 E r , ,1 Boncaster 5 3 T, Bend n Or 1 I Marigold Si E I -ij S Fairy Gold. 9 I chestnut, 1877 Hoiici. Str.angnH.niny4ojyuta the readerof "Daily - Racing. Ffnn. run out the "pedigret; of Sir Barton. rWelL.do I remeiiiber the cause of my failure to do so just prior to the decision of last years Kentucky Derby, and this was due to the supposedly reliable information that the horse,. 011 account of blood poison, was not at all likely to see the post. Alls well, however, that ends well, and no better lit horse stripped for action for the 1919 Kentucky Derby than Sir Barton. Sir Barton was far the best of last years three-year-olds, maiden though he was prior to the running of the Kentucky Derby, and I now regard him as being the best of the four-year-olds, and this opinion is strengthened by his winning performance in the Merchants and Citizens Handicap at Saratoga. I expect Sir Barton to. give the champion Man o War the race of his life when they meet in the big special race at Kenilworth Park October 12. I know the son of Star Shoot to be speedy, game, and a battler surely, and of infinitely better class than those which Man o War has been slaughtering with all ease all summer long. Win or lose. Sir Barton has earned for himself a niche in the equine halls of fame. Though not a big one, lie is strong, sturdy, willing and courageous to a degree and one-which must have an equally bright future before him r.s a .sire when the time conies for his race course activities, to cease. There can be no doubt of this. In the first place Sir Barton has the make, shape and look of a successful stud horse. Not one of your wavy neck fellows is, Sir Barton, but a horse of determined mien which carries his tail as a ship her pennant when straightened by a stiff breeze. And a well-carried flag is ever indicative of strength, character and resoluttion. Sir Bartons sire, the dead Star Shoot, achieved all during his stud life an enviable reputation as the sire of many winners, but it was not until his declining years that lie sent out such a smasher as Sir Barton. Star Shoots greatest success as a sire lies in the excellence of his daughters as brood mares. Twenty-six of them are the dams of winners of over 17,000 this year. Star Shoot is a son of the largest money-earner in the history of the turf, the bay Isinglass, and his dam the chestnut Astrology, a daughter of the chestnut Derby winner of C7, Hermit. The meaning of color, I am free to admit, is rather beyond me, but I do know that the two famous brood mare sires of Isonomy descent, Star Shoot and Gallinule, are both chestnuts and both their dams daughters of the chestnut Hermit. Sir Barton comes by his chestnut shading honestly enough, for his dam. Lady Sterling, was a chestnut daughter of the chestnut Hanover, and hers a fast color, for her other good son, the chestnut Sir Martin, was sired by the brown Ogden. The best of Lady Sterlings sons are .chestnuts, as are the male offspring of that other good brood mare, Fairy Gold, which bred Fair Play and Flittergold to the cover of the brown Hastings, the chestnut Friar Reck by the brown Rock Sand and the chestnut Golden Measure, a son of the brown Florizel II. From the above it would appear that great brood mares are capable of transmitting their own coloring to the best of their offspring, but on the other hand, that exceptionally good brood mare, Teas Over, had a brown, a black and a chestnut, all by the one bay sire King Eric. So much for the color scheme. Sir Barton is a member of the world famous Maid of Mnsham branch of the old Vintner mare family, which of late lias been productive of so many of the best of the race horses, sires and brood mares in all quarters of the globe. High-class race horses which trace to Maid of Masham are Cyllene, Peter. Timothy, Gilbert. Ecouen, Son o Mine, St. Damien. Darley Di:e, Winkfields Pride, Fair Play, Friar -Rock, Omar Khayyam, etc., and well-nigh all of these which have lieen afforded the opportunity have proved their worth as sires. Notably Cyllene. as the sire of four winners of the Derby, Fair Play, sire of Man o War, leads with well over 33,000 in first moneys alone this season; Winkfields Pride, as the sire of two winners of the Grand Prix in Finasseur and Quo Vadis. etc. Lady Sterling, dam of Sir Barton, is a daughter of that almost incomparable brood mare sire Hanover, which, it would appear, takes corresponding rank in this country with Macaroni in England. It is a significant fact that both of these niarvelously successful brood mare sires are of Herod descent, as were Gladiator, sire of Queen Mary; Clarion, sire of Agnes; Glencoe, sire of Pocahontas; yet there are some who still decry the efilcacy of the blending of the blood plan of mating. The lessons to bo learned from a study of Sir Bartons breeding are that he is bred to be, as he has proved himself to be, a race horse, and also that he is bred to be, as he is certain to become, a success as a sire, especially so iftho blood of Melbourne and that of Galopin and Bend Otis found close up in his mates. Of both Galopin and Bend Or Sir Barton has none, a most unusual occurrence- at this day and time, and outcrossing the life and soul of horse breeding, therefore assurance doubly sure for Sir Barton as a sire. ,,,. Kenilworth Park, the scene of the big race, is one of the newest and most modern of Canadian race courses. It is situated just outside the thriving town of Windsor, across the river from Detroit, now a city of close to one million inhabitants and the. center of the great automobile industry of the United States. The course is in splendid condition and all preparations have been completed to entertain the largest crowd that ever witnessed a race in Canada. The race will be at one .mile and aNiuarter for the richest turf prize ever offered anywhere, 5,000 and a 5,000 Gold Cup, the winner to take all. Sir Barton will carry 120 pounds and Man o War 120. Man o War was bred in Kentucky by August Belmont, is owned by Samuel D. Riddle of Philadelphia, trained by Louis Fenstel and will, be ridden by jockey Clarence Kummer. - He lias won 09,405 to date, meeting defeat but once in twenty, starts. Brilliant as a two-year,-old, he has been invincible .as a three-year-old. His record-breaking feats this year are known the world over.
