ANOTHER WHITNEY TRIUMPH John P. Grier and Damask First and Second in 0,000 Annapolis Handicap. LAUREL, Md., October 9. The racing coffers of H. P. Whitney were, swelled to the extent of 0,000 this afternoon. John P. Grier and Damask, his color-bearers in the Annapolis Handicap, with 0,C00 added, the- feature of a good card at the Maryland State Fair course, finished one-tno ahead of E. ;B. McLeans The Porter, Ral Parrs Paul Jones and four others. John P. Griers portion of the winnings amounted to ,000 and Damask earned ,000 for his second. An immense holiday crowd was on hand for tle race and was regaled with a really thrilling contest, as is usually the case in long-distance racing, although the Whitney pair were both eased up at the finish.- John P. Grier went to the front immediately, after the start and made all the pace, but the shifting of positions behind him always kept up the interest nud at different times a half dozen ,of the contestants jjcemcd to have a chance. . Swinging past the stands the first time Admiral Cary T. Graysons Gnome followed closest to John P. Grier two and a half lengths behind. Paul Jones came next, followed by The Porter, Damask, Irish Kiss and Bcllsolarl Through the backstretch the positions remained practically .the same with the exception of a generally closer grouping and the movement of The Porter into third place when Gnome fell lame and began to ease up on the far turn the second time. The McLean colorboarer came a bit wide and closed up within a length of .the pacemaker, but hts impost of 120 pounds began .to tell about that time and he was unequal to the task of maintaining his advantage over Damask, which had come into prominence on the turn. Jockey L. Morrig returned to the saddle today after serving a five-day suspension imposed by the stewards for altering his weight to ride King George last Friday. Sam Louis claimed Miss Rankin, winner of the fourth race yesterday, from Mike Seifert for ,340. Charlie Summy went back to -the E. B. McLean barn after the last race, when ?4,355 was deposited in the box. St. Michael and Mollie Barnes arc the latest additions to the schooling list. E. P. Summerfield of Baltimore made his debut in racing circles when Charlie Hoifhre. acting for him, claimed Fizer from Ral Parr for ,055. Two other- claims were made Thursday, both in the seventh race. W. B. Marshall took Pimlico from J. E. Griffith for ,950. and Mrs. R. I. Miller got Chow for ,375, claiming him from G. W J. Bissell.
