PLEASING BAY FOR COCHRAN , , Wins Two Main Races of the Saratoga Card. Cimarron Takes the Mohawk Selling Stakes from Copper Demon More Rain and Mud. SARATOGA, X. Y.. August IS. Changed going through a heavy rain brought havoc to the original van, for withdrawals from tin: different dashes brought the fields down to small numbers, and the absence of the better class left the more ordinary to fight it out for the purses, The racing, considering this condition, was better than was expected, several close finishes enlivening au otherwise routine day. Oifford A. Cochrans green and gold hoops were pleasantly conspicuous during the afternoon, and were carried to victory in both the feature races by representatives of his stable. His Cimarron, the tli rec -year-old daughter of His Majesty Koyal Martyr, accounting for the Mohawk Stakes, worth hB.700 net, and Smoke Screen won the Oalway mile handicap. Four started in the stake race, with Conper Demon a pronounced favorite. Cimarron was next fancied, with Wellfinder also coming in fcr -oni" action. The diminutive E. Kuminer was astride Cimarron and her light impost of !J pounds cnubicd her to race into the lead at once, with Wellfinder in pursuit, and Copper Demon, having difficulty finding his racing legs at the start, .following - a good distance in the rear, lie succeeded in getting into his stride after going a quarter and soon afterward displaced Wellfinder from second place, continuing to be closely in attendance on Cimarron to the end. When straightened away for the stretch it appeared that he would pass Cimarron with ease, but the Cochran filly held to her task resolutely and in the last sixteenth forced Itiee, on Copper Demon, to go to the whip, but to no avail, for Cimarron retained a lengths advantage to the end. Wellfinder was fifteen lengths from the pair, a like distance in front of Love Tap. Smoke Screen and Hilly Mclaughlin were the principal figures in the Gnlway Handicap from the start, they alternating in the lead until in the last sixteenth, where Fa tor called for Smoke Screen V reserve and lie raced into a half length lead which lie kept until crossing the finish. Lmins lauded in third place. The latter was in close pursuit of the leaders in the early running under restraint and appeared as if he could pass into the lead whenever Coltilotti was disposed to let him do so, but when called on in the stretch he failed badly. GALETA IN RUNAVAY STYLE. G. I. Widencrs Onletu, a daughter of Garry Herrmann Lady Galeta. won the opening race in runaway style, proving herself much the best of the maidens that started with her. Fa tor got her away well and after going the first eighth she was in command and increased her winning advantages by as far as her rider elected. Tulwar propped when the barrier was released, but showed a fine burst of early speed which soon enabled her to be in closest pursuit of the winner and. holding on fairly well through the stretch racing, had little difficulty taking the middle portion of the purse. Rounce. an outsider, came from far back" to finish in third place. Dovesroost began promisingly, but ran out on the turns and destroyed her chance, also that of Plying Jib, which she forced out with her. The second race was productive of one of the best finishes witnessed during the present meeting, Biff Hang and Night Raider figuring in a stirring duel, with Sandes superior skill over Scohie giving the victory to Riff Bung. The pair were practically on even terms through the entire length of the stretch, both striving gallantly for the ad vantage and unbale to get away from each other. Sandes rousing final effort enabled Riff Rang to finish inches in front. Tom M.cTaggarl was right on. top of the. pair at the end anil coming fast. Night Raider probably was best and would have won but for suffering from interference, when Turner on Rep came over toward tin; inner rail and cut off Night Raider when he tried to get through next to the rail. The race iiad selling conditions and Riff Rang was elevated from an entered price of ,500 by IS. Davis to if.1,000. but his owner protected him with an advance of $.". Night Raider was claimed by G. W. Fonnan for ?1,J00. ANOTHER FOR CONSISTENT EDWINA. The consistent Edwina scored another victory when she won the fifth race, a mile and an eighth dash exclusively for fillies and mares. Chateau Thierry lauded in second place after a mild diivc with Lady Emmcliuc. Scotland Yet, the only other starter, was beaten off. Wilsons claim of foul against Carroll on Chateau Thierry was recognized by tiie stewards and tin: Sanford filly was disqualified. There might have been a different result had Carroll used jnorc intelligence in his riding of Chateau Thierry. Repeatedly he got her cut off and continued holding her in a pocket. In the fctretch drive he ranged her alongside of Lady Emmeliue and persisted in bumping her. Carroll was suspended for five days for rough riding. The Lexington Stable scored its initial victory of the meeting when Missionary, son of Hourless Mission, led his competitors home in the closing dash for two-year-olds, non-winners of two races, or one purse of the value of ,000. The Simms-McClol-Jand connections felt confident of his ability and the colt displayed ability to race well in the muddy going, racing into the lead when Schuttinger elected and winning with great ease. Ultimata was his closest follower for the entire race, but near the end she hud to be ridden hard to retain second place from Aknusti. Threatening weather was the rule during most of the afternoon, but the prospect of another ntoriu following that of last night did not deter the full Hlivnilh of racegoers witnessing the sport.
