It lias a rich history and the list of winners include some of the most famous thoroughbreds in Hie history of American racing. The first running resulted in victory for Hunter and Travels Kentucky, a son of Ijxiiigtou, and the progeny of that famous stallion won nine victories in the Travcrs in the first fifteen years of its hislory. These include Maiden, Merrill, Itan-Nhee, Kingfisher, Harry P.assett, Tom l.owlinK, Sultana and Duke of Magneta. Last year tin; Travels resulted in a victory for Man o War, in which he established a new track record of L:U1 i for the distance, witli Upset second ami John I. tlrier third. The noniiiintioii-t for this years running closed November 27. 1010. with T2 entries, of which three were void because of the death of nominators. Kljclit were declared at L-j each, eighty-five at 0 each and sixteen at .j each, leaving sixty-two eligibles. The distance for the race is now one mile and a quarter. It was run at one mile and three-quarters until 1S0O. The distance has been decreased several times and later increased again tduce that time. The event has a guaranteed cash value of .Jl-.r.OO.
