ROMANCE OF FRENCH BROOD MARE The famous brood mare Saintc Marie de Campan, belonged some twenty years ago to M. Julien I.orihiois, a French turf enthusiast, now a member of the Jockey Club of Relgium and editor of Le SiKirtsman at Rrussols. Sainte Marie de Campan, though raced regularly, never succeeded in winning but one race and that a race for gentleman riders in which she was ridden by her owner. Then in her final race at Spa she fell at one of the obstacles and went into a swamp from which she was dragged only witli great difficulty. Retired from racing, she became the property of Henry Tcrnynck, a manufacturer at Roubaix, who used her for several seasons in hunt meetings and later turned her out on his grounds with the idea of letting her rest for the remainder of her days. Then one day the fantastic idea came to him of using her for breeding purposes. Strange as it may seem, she produced eight winners, and one of them, Sainte Fiole. produced in her turn the famous stake winner Odo. Viator, in Le Jockey. -
