SMOKE SCREENS FINE SPEED . . Gives Him Victory Over Stars in the Huron Handicap. 4 Tryster and Bunting Give Whitney Stable Followers a Sad Afternoon. SARATOGA. X. Y., August 2.". 0 if ford A. Cochrans Smoke Screen, which was added to the Huron Handicap jit a mile :ind three-sixteenths, worth ,800 net to tlic winner, again figured in n winning performance, the second in two days, having accounted for the Iittstown Handicap yesterday. Tliis time lie showed himself to he worthy of ranking with the best in the three-year-old division, for he won with ease after having shown the way throughout. Sporting Blood was his closest follower at "the finish with Hit of White in third place, Tryster and Flanihette bringing up in the rear. Smoke Screen, wih his lighter impost of 115 pounds was rushed into the lead at once and ids high early speed kept him well in advance of the others, although Ktunmer had him under restraint. Tryster and Kit of Wliite kept him close company to the last turn, where Flambetto and Sporting P.Iood moved up, hut; the next eighth found Tryster and Flamhottc, the latter making her initial start since her triumph over Hit of White, in the Uitonia Oaks, giving way. Hit of White had to come wide into the stretch on account of her outside position, but Sporting Blood saved much ground by racing next to the rail. The newly acquired J Surf Fisher representative made a game rulf in the last eighth and downed Hit or White Uickly. hut failed by his length to overhaul "Smoke Serpen, which was Still under restraint at the e:d. Trvster indicated clearly a lack of staying ability at present and Flambette was minus her former sensational stretch sprint. Tliis "marked another day of upsets, the more extensively backed ones going down to defeai steadily, the exception being It. T. Wilsons Dim- uiiisdale, with the Harry Payne Whitney representatives, Tryster and Hunting, the latter, overwhelmingly favored, serving in the. role of chief offenders. The sport was interesting and witnessed 1 by a fairly large attendance, augmented by many New Yorkers, the advance guard of week-enders. SURF RIDER BEATS WHITNEY CRACK. Huntings presence in the closing race caused wholesale withdrawals, ten of the original eighteen entered declining. In view of Huntings previous victory, accomplished with the utmost ease over some . crack two-year-olds, the short quotations made against him was justified and lie was the medium for heavy support, causing a further drop in his price. John K. Mnddens Surf Rider had friends, his owner making no secret of the fact that he expected the Superman Sea Spray colt to finish ill advance of the Whitney colt. Hunting had absolutely no excuses in the race, for when the start came Sande got him off with My Play, Which had begun under the barrier several times and at the send off was fully in motion. Bunstnr joined them at ouce and the trio raced on level terms, for a quarter before being joined by Surf Itider. Bemuse of being forced to come wide the latter lost somo ground on the last turn, but in tUe stretch he held Bunting safe, the pair coming locked in a hard drive through the last eighth. Bunstnr was tiring fast near the finish and Violinist, and Sweep By, the latter having suffered from some early interference, were gaining. Man o Wars brother. My Ilay. quit in the Stretch. The frequently disappointing Donnacona again flg-nri.j Ji. .. .-i.y i..iii.iv in the third race. Previously it has been the cry "lie will win if he gets awny," his bad post actions making him decidedly unrciiiible and he has refused to leave tht; barrier, lie was off this afternoon hesitatingly, but not so fftr away from the leaders as to eliminate him, ; ii. 1 he fluttered extensively when he moved no in the stretch lis if he would pass Ilobey Baker with case. But Hobey linker held him safe and passed the litiisli a neck in advance. SAGACITY AGAIN DEFEATS GALLIVANT. Sagacitys previous victory over Gallivant was discredited and the latter, had the call, as he did in a previous essay, when the pair met. Wisdom was again faulty, for Sagacity, after indulging Gallivant with the lead until almost in the last eighth, raced by him to win with speed in reserve. Sam Louis bid lie winner up ,400 over her entered price of ,000, but she was bought in by her owner with an advance of . Louis then: claimed Gallivant at a cost of ,905. The -opener, under French claiming; clauses, brought ,to the br.rrier thirteen starters after Greenwich Village had been scratched, and Dick Dead-eye was claimed by W. A. Buck for ,810. Doughnut, which lias had frequent trials with indifferent success, was again a choice and again failed dismally, the race resulting in a close finish of three, witli Dolman, coming with a great rush, winning from Vendor and Xose Dive. Dimmesdale, carrying the colors of president It. T. Wilson, scored in game style in the second race, for which he was favorite, and the only successful one of the afternoon. He might have had to exert himself more but for Mercury, a well-regarded one, stumbling at the start and unseating Penman, his rider. Jockey Fator was again much in the limelight and added t his total of winners at this meeting by piloting the victors Dimmesdale. Ilobey Baker and Surf Itider. He also had the mount on Sporting Blood, which finished second in tin; Huron Handicap. E. 0. Soulc has decided to dispose of his consistent mure Edwiua and .she will be in the consignment Friday night that the Fasig-Tipton Company will sell by auction. K. I. Miller has bought privately the jumper Stucco from .1. Lumsden. Leatherfaco was bought this afternoon for ,500 by W. L. Oliver and he will race tomorrow in his interest. Continued on second page. Banker Brown and Blowing Bubbles were loaded with the consignment that John Miller took to Lexington this morning. The Bradley pair is intended to be turned out for this year at Idle Hour Farm. Jockey C. Duel, who is now under contract to Bud Fisher, will go with the horses to Kentucky after the running of the Futurity. Former jockey A Knapp, who now- has the AV. S. Kilmer horses in charge, will ship Our Flag and Exterminator to Latonia after Exterminator fills his engagements at Belmont Park. The Redstone Stable retains a thirty-five per cent interest in the earnings of Sporting Blood in the Lawrence Realization and the Latonia Championship Stakes, according to the terms of sale.
