DUKE SIGNS WITH AGA KHAN . t Noted Trainer Takes Charge of Oriental Potentates Stable. Good Racing and Close Finishes at Deauville ONeill Heads the Jockeys. SPECIAL CORRESPONDENCE. PARIS. France, August 11. The real riicing began yesterday at Deauville. The weather was overcast and showery in the morning, but after lunch it cleared and we got in a pleasant afternoons sport. The going was not so hard as we have been having, and the fields were in consequence larger. The first gossip we had handed us on reaching the course was William Duke having signed with the Aga Khan, and that he would be a purchaser of yearlings at Deauville for his account. This was pleasing news for the breeders, for they are .at present on the anxious seat regarding prospective purchasers. AVhether Frank ONeill will go with his old partner next year remains to be seen. It has been common property for some time that Murphys best two-year-old was tlm half-brother to MacKinley, by name Despard, and by Maintenon Mrs. Despard. One day at Saint Cloud we asked Murphy if this colt was pleasing him all fight. It was just at the time that he was in the awful slump the stable was having. In his quiet dry way he replied that he had not asked him for much for fear that he might fool him. AAell, the colt made his debut in the Prix Yaeow-lef of ,000, five-eighths of n mile. There were six runners and the other five were from the Mantachcff, Colin, Sol Joel, Edouard dc Rothschild and Hcnnessy stables. AVhen the tapes went up Frank ONeill was away well and the result was never in doubt. The winner cantered all the way. AVhether he is a robust colt is the question. AVe rather seem to think he is on the delicate side. He is engaged in everything next year and in the Prix Moray at Deauville this year. VERDIER HAS CLOSE CALL. , . Horses for courses is the axiom over here, and Aerdier certainly likes Deauville, but it took him all his time and Bellhonse all his skill to beat Henncssys Take a Step a short head over the mile and a half course in the Prix du Cerele. The Prix de la Chaumlere, for two-year-olds, three-quarters of a mile, was considered to be a good thing for the Duke-tiained Triomphal, ridden by Garner. He looked all over the winner until Bellhonse came along with the Due Decazes Sainte Ursule. nlid in a game finish won by a neck. It was a fine performance. The winner is a sister to Harpo-crate, third in the Grand Prix, by Sainte Ange III. Hush, by St. Surf. She also is well engaged. Since Milton Henry has started riding again, after his terrible fall, he is in the finest form. Always a first-class horseman, it is many years singe he has been showing the skill he is riding with at present. In the last race of the day he jollied the queer-tempered Bold Boy into putting his best foot forward for the Colin stable and returned the sweet price of seven to one, with the stable connections on. The last day at Aichy had as an attraction the Prix Reves dOr. Marcel Boussacs filly Experience, by Prince Palatinp: Helene, justified the opinion formed of her in her first start at Maisons Laf-fitte. The crowd at Deauville is as big as usual. There is not, happily, the reckless and -wild expenditure of money seen here last year. The betting at the course is less, and the gambling at the Casino much less. Mrs. Duryea was receiving congratulations on the showing of the young Sweepers, and" -Mr. ""John- Sanford was also presents but since young Stephen has become such a polo enthusiast lie, too, is interested in the game. It is a pity Holiie Hughes is not over to keep him more interested in the racing. The- race for the lead with the jockeys today shows ONeill with a slight lead over McGee and Bellhoiise. If the Macombcr stable slumps again Frank may have trouble in leading at the finish of the season.
