FRENCH WINNERS OF GOODWOOD CUP In the old days French owners used to make a specialty of winning the Goodwood Cup, ever since Auguste Lupin won it with Jouvence, which was ridden by Tom Sherwood, the Epsom trainer. It was with a Goodwood Cup winner, Fleur de Lys, that the "father of the French turf." as Auguste Lupin was called, started his stud. He purchased her at the Hampton Court Paddock Sales at a time when she was in foal to Emilias. AAhen in England to see Jouvence run. Lupin saw and bought a brood mare named Payment. She was mated with The Flying Dutchman, and foaled Dollar, which was a celebrity and the sire of Salvator. Dollar won two Goodwood Cups for Auguste Lupin. Monarque Avon it for Count Lagrange and Flagiolet for M. Le-fevre. Even the Austro-Germans won a Goodwood Cupl This was with the unbeaten mare Kincsem, 1878, probably one of the best race horses which ever won the cup. Flaneur in Sporting Times.
