NEAR SARATOGAS CLOSING ; Only Two More Days Remain of a High Class Meeting. : Hobey Baker Victorious in the Amsterdam Reprisal Shows His Superior Speed Again. SARATOGA. N. Y., August 29. W. .T. Salmons Ilobey linker earned a well-deserved victory in the Amsterdam Stakes, a high-priced selling dash at a mile, featuring a somewhat ordinary racing offering this afternoon. Servitor lauded in second place and War Note finished third. Hobey linkers margin was only a nose over Servitor and it was a lucky score, for in addition to having to force his way to the front between Servitor and War Note. Hobey Baker stumbled at a critical point, which put his success in jeopardy. The judges, however, gave him the award. In the early running War Note had scurried into a long lead, witli Hobey Baker closest in attendance and Sweep Clean following. Servitor was many lengths back, witli Edwina, making her first start in the W. S. Kilmer colors. Sweep Clean was passed by Servitor just before reaching the stretch, but War Note continued in the lead with every appearance of being the victor. Hobey Baker, however, responded gamely to hard riding, but Servitor, too, was coming fast on the outside?. The trio of leaders were on even terms seventy yards from the finish, but being in the center Hobey Bakers progress was hampered until in the last few strides, where he forced his way through, but stumbled right at the end. It was a close decision, but the award to Hobey linker was popular. .The.race gave alietTnni oTf42;i to tiie winner. Todays attendance was probably the lightest noted during the meeting and, while the card as a whole had an off-day aspect, good sport was the rule, most of the finishes being close and hard fought. J. S. Cosden scored his first steeplechase race of the Saratoga season this afternoon when his Le Marsouiu outstayed the three others she met over the about two-mile course. New Haven finished second and Hen Hampsou third. Wisest Fool, the receding favorite bringing up in the rear. Wisest Fool fenced badly and blundered at most of the obstacles several .imes bringing his rider to grief. The winner on the other hand fenced clearly, responded readily to ris riders call and once in command held New Haven safe to the finish, though ridden hard near :he end. New Haven surprised by taking a good lead soon after the start and jumping without mishap, continued in the van until the next to the last fence, where the winner overhauled him, but he gave stubborn buttle through tin? flat racing. Hen llampson outstayed Wisest Fool for third money. KNOT FAILS HIS ADMIRERS. In the high-weight handicap at three-quarters. Admiral C. T. Graysons Knot was given preference over Walter 31. Jeffords Reprisal. Tiie pair nearly absorbed all attention in the race, whatever support there was for any of the other starters went to Ten-Lee. The running found Serapis forcing the fast pace made by Heprisal for the first quarter, but the Jefford representative drew farther away on the hist turn and held sway to the finish. Knot began slowly and Ii.id difficulty in settling in ner stride until straightened out for the stretch drive, where she quickly disposed of the faint-hearted Ten-Lee and began her rush to overtake the leaders, but failed badly in this and was beaten by Serapis for second place mi the final drive. Tiie winner wa.-s first by a comfortable margin. Favorites and second choices accounted for nearly all the dashes, entailing losses to tiie price quoters. The outstanding upset of the afternoon came with the running of the fifth race, in which only three started, with Elected II. a pronounced favorite. Quecreek as strongly a second choice and Kccouut the extreme outsider. Elected II. took command at once, but was never able to get far away from Recount and finally in the stretch succumbed to the hitters rush, the Stoneham representative winning by almost a length. Quecreek joined in the drive at the finish, but was directly in the rear of the leading pair. SCOBIES RIDE AIDS TULWAR. The opener, contested by two-year-old fillies, was an open affair, witli Avispa finally centered on as the choice. Wisdom was astray, but not so badly, as Avispa did land in second place, being led home by John E. Muddens Tulwar, on which Scobie showed rare judgment in keeping her close to the inner rail instead of coining around the leaders and thereby avoided being forced wide. Evil and Beverly Belle were the pacemakers for the first three-eighths, but Heverly Helle at this point dropped back from forward contention. Avispa and Citation, both slow beginners, moved up prominently in the last eighth, Citation suffering from interference when going fastest as she attempted to slip through next to the inner rail. Avispa finished well, but so did Tulwar mid the JIailden filly scored easily. Evil, while tiring, had speed enough in reserve to last for third place. A claim of foul made by Turner was not considered seriously by the stewards. Frank J. Bruen of the Havana track departed tonight for a brief visit to Nabchester, Vt.. before going to Helmoiit Paik, where he will continue missionary work in behalf of the winter meeting to be held in Cuba. The closing dash which brought out the better grade of two-year-olds and served for some of them in the nature of a Hopeful Stakes trial, found the Harry Payne Whitney pair. Hunting and Whisk-away, overwhelming choices and while Hunting, the second string of the entry succeeded, it was only after a rousing finish in which lie was forced to his utmost to down Snob II. coupled with Royal Charlie, as the John San ford entry. Sunreigh landed in third place. Whiskaway began in a tangle and suffered from interference, which caused him to bo far back. The race was a hel- Continued on tenth page. Jockey Frank Keogh was among the visitors. He has been given an x-ray examination by Admiral Cary T. Grayson. A small blood clot was discovered under his lung, but the admiral said that while it would dissolve soon. Keogh requires further rest from the saddle. He would probably befit to ride in the Futurity, iu which he is engaged to ride one of the Montfort Jones starters, pre-siimbaly St. Henry, the half brother to Sir Barton and Sir Martin. The two-year-old Emotion lias been purchased by Montfort Jones from John E. Madden and will be trained by F. M. Taylor during the eastern racing season. The good campaigner Koyce Kools will be out of racing until late iu the fall and probably for the year, having gone amiss after his last workout. Jockey "Buddie" Eusor is making a valiant effort to reform and is galloping horses daily for J. Shaughnessy. Ho will ride free lance, at I.elmont Park, his suspension expiring wilh the last day of racing here.
