1 SMART GUY A REPEATER Scores His Second Success of Devonshire Meeting in Fridays Principal Race. WINDSOR, Ont., September 2. A. Swenkes Smart Guy scored his second success of the meeting when he led from start to finish and captured the ,000 Skillet Claiming Handicap, the sixth and feature attraction at Devonshire Park this afternoon. He was tiring in the closing stages, however, and driving hard near the end to retain a length advantage over Runquoi and Blaekte Daw. The narrow margin of a bead separated the latter pair at the end. Blackie Daw raced In close quarters on the inside most of the way and was unable to find an opening during the stretch run. This being ladies day the fair sex turned out in such large numbers that the attendance was swelled to the largest of the week. Ideal midsummerlike weather again prevailed, and the course was in excellent condition. The first race of the afternoon was for maiden two-year-olds. The black celt Foy won it easily. He and Shady Nook were the general favorites, but there was strong support accorded John Morrill, a first time starter, from the Sunnyland Stable. The latter began slowly but finished fast and earned second place in the last stride. Shady Nook was never in it after a brief early display of speed. Marsdale and Dorlus were best liked in the second race, but neither figured prominently, the winner turning up in Mabel Curtis, which led all the way by a wide margin. Eumpety Bumps was second just as easily, and Orma Dale third. Tubby A., under the sparkling ride of II. J. Burke, led all the way in the third race and gamely withstood the fast closing challenge of Merrimac, which gained with every stride near the end, but too late to be of any avail. The veteran Top o th Morning added another success to his long list of victories when he annexed the fourth race. After a hard stretch drive he managed to score a head victory over the weakly handled Wabuska. Midnight Sun again showed a dull performance in this race. He was installed favorite despite the fact that he was sore going to the post, and he pulled up a trifle lame. Three carloads of horses, made up of various small stables, left here today for Dufferin Park, Toronto, where racing opens on Thursday next. At the close of the meeting here tomorrow judge Joseph A. Murphy will return to his home in St. ; Louis for a short rest. D. S. Fountain, "Doc" Reed and W. L. Stanfield have arranged to ship their stables to Thorncliffe Park, Toronto, early next week. A further shipment will leave tomorrow night for Latonia, including the stables of A. L. Kirby, J. C. Ferris and G. J. Long. C. M. Waite will leave here tonight for Mexico City, where he will superintend the construction of the improvements to be made to the plant at the Mexico capital.
