RANGOON FIRST IN ANOTHER Carries High Weight and Vanquishes Some Fast Horses. t 1 Distinction Wins in a Canter Over an Improving Track Favorites Well Picked. g i LATONIA, Ky., September 28. Rangoon continued Ills winning ways and beat a good band home that opposed him In the mile and a sixteenth handicap, to all of .which he was conceding weight. His Fucoess, however, was in a measure aided by jockey Garners action in cutting across in front of the others on the first turn, which enabled him to race into a good lead and had his closest followers under hard pressure afterwards to keep pace with him. He began tiring in the last eighth and barely succeeded in getting home in advance of Bunga Buck, with Bit of White following close up. Bit of White was making her first start since racing at Saratoga and she was given the most consideration, but it seems the E. R. Bradley establishment cant win a race. She was closest in pursuit of Rangoon for the greater part of the way, but in the last seventy yards began tiring. There were seven starters in the race, but the first three nlways dominated during the running. The mile and a sixteenth in 1:45 was an exceptionally good performance. Jockey Garner was suspended for five days by the stewards for his rough riding. T. C, McDowells Distinction showed a return this afternoon to her best form and made a show of the good, band she met in. the three-quarters handicap, winning hard held by as big a margin as her rider elected. Her high speed enabled her to race Into a long lead at once and, after rounding into the stretch, Howard only had to steady her tolreep; fnrln the van. High Cost finished gamely and overhauled Minute Man for second place. The Canadian crack. Judge Ellsworth, and Smoke Screen made their debut here, but neither figured importantly in the runuing. Distinctions three-quarters in 1:12and was particularly good in view of the state of the going. Pleasant weather conditions and a vastly improved racing offering resulted in the presence at the course of one of the largest midweek crowds to view the sport. The track still showed the traces of dampness, but improved as the afternoon progressed. Interesting contests developed in most instances, several being of the close variety ami requiring the official placing to determine the victor. Favorites scored frequently, their success broadening betting activities. The longest priced winner proved to be Sweet Liberty, in the opening dash. Her success was achieved in lucky fashion and due only to Orpund-Swells swerving out when she appeared a certain winner. It enabled Sweet Liberty lo win by a nose. In nddition to losing the purse Gentry lost the mare also, J. L. Earl claiming her for ,800 Her transfer today, however, was only slig.itly in advance of original plans, for all the Gentry horses go under the auctioneers hammer tomorrow. CHANGE OF RIDERS AIDS GEORGETTE. The change in riders from E. Graves to Lyke worked to advantage in the running of Georgette and the Scott filly had an easy time of it in winning the second race, for which she was favorite. Marimba and Canny Lady divided the shorter portions of the purse. Klmpalong was much the best in the mile and a quarter dash and it was surprising to note the number of jams that Garner got him into during the early running of the race, but gaining a clear course on the stretch turn, where he also saved much ground, he won as his rider pleased. .T. C. Stofte. hard ridden, outfiuished Kingfisher for second place. T. J. Pejidergasts Lord Allen, which, during the spring gave much promise, but repeatedly disappointed, showed a capital performance in the sixth race and It enabled him to land his first purse since leaving Lexington. He was tiring near the end and Scoble had to ride him hard to keep in front of Brnice K. and Topmast. The concluding race fell to Green Gold, which led for the entire way and outstayed Marse John, the favorite. Cantilever finishing third. Jockey Mooney was suspended for five days by the stewards for rough riding while astride Wild Flower in the closing dash. Rockminister and Pegasus were worked a mile after the- last race in preparation for their start In tlitf Queen City Handicap, and covered the distance in 1:41, Rockminister finishing first by a scant neck. Accelerate was claimed out of the last race by Allen and Hall at a cost of ,000. The revocation of jockey A. Collins riding license by the Jockey Club automatically debarred him from riding here and lie was taken off of the mounts he was carded to ride this afternoon. Trainer Alec Gordon will send Violinist to Pim-lico after the racing here to fill his engagement in the Pirallco Futurity. Sporting Blood, winner of this years Latonia Championship, will not figure in any more racing this year, as he is now practically out of training. E. Cotrell, who serves as an official at Erie, Pa., was among todays visitors, and will do some missionary work among the horsemen here in behalf of the Erie racing. A
