STEEPLECHASING AT LAUREL Races Through Field to be Encouraged During Maryland State Fair October Meeting. . LAUREL, Md., September 28. Each year steep-lechasing plays an important part iu Maryland racing and this fall more than ever before there Is promise of excellent sport through the field. The older horses of the steeplechase division with few exceptions have hardly been up to quality of years past, but there are many young jumpers ot much promise. At Laurel there will be ample opportunity for these new jumpers and the races are ;o arranged that they lead up to the stakes for the three-year-olds. "Billy" Garth, a past master in the fitting of jumpers, has already shown some exceptionally good prospects at Aqueduct and they wifl. be ready for what is offered at the Maryland course. Musty, Hallavill and Gimme are the ones he has uncovered thus far and each one of them can both run and jump. The "Chase" that is exclusively for three-year-olds is the Ticket of Leave and it lias added money value of ,000. Then, there is the Patux-ent for three-year-olds and over, with a value of ,000 in added money. Of course "Uncle Billy" lias his eye on both of these plums, but there are other three-year-olds that may keep him busy. Matt Brady has Phoenix that he is training for Joseph E. Davis and Sobrigade that he is handling for the Dosoris Stable. Both of them jump well and are sure to go well through the Laurel fields. Big Jim Healy Is not saying much about his prospects, but it is a sure thing he will be on hand and then the Greentree stable Is also certain to be represented. Howard Lewis is not idle and altogether there is sure to be great sport through the field at Laurel. 4
