ANOTHER GLORIOUS PROGRAM - - - -i u . Ontario Jockey Club Offers Three Big Stake Attractions. Sagamook Wins Stanley Produce Stakes in Great Finish Mich-. aelmas to Johnny Dundee. f TORONTO, Ont., September 28. The Ontario Jockey Club offered its patrons as attractions this afternoon the Stanley Produce Stakes, ,500 added, the Coventry Steeplechase, ,000 added, and the Michaelmas and Voltigeur Handicaps, each of ,000 added. The Stanley Produce Stakes has been run continuously since 1894 and in todays race the Ross entry, Ajom and Sudor, was heavily supported. It looked like an easy victory for tbp pair, and for that reason the Crowd was greatly surprised when G. M. Hendrics Sagamook be.it Ajom by a head in a thrilling finish. Sagamook is a son of Charles Edward Otslkcta, and was certainly best today. He encountered most of the bad luck of the race, being iu close quarters during the first eighth, was cut off and stumbled and then taken to the outside. In spite of these handicaps he came on with great, speed and overtaking Ajom in the last eighth outgamed the Ross colt in one of the greatest struggles ever wlthncssed for this historic race. Chief Sponsor was third, tiring badly in the last sixteenth after taking the lead. The Michaelmas Handicap was for two-year-olds at three-quartcrsof a mile. It .marked another fatl-ure-for the Ross stable. Harmonious and Spanish Maize carried the commanders colors and the hopes of the many followers of his popular stable, but neither figured prominently. The winner turned up in Johnny Dundee and he scored easily, beating Redstone by two lengths, with Ogarite in third place. Spanish Maize, of which glowing reports have been circulated all summer, made his first appearance with the colors up in this race. He is probably the biggest two-year-old in training. Iu his work lie has shown keen speed, but in his race this afternoon he kept "climbing" and was never settled in his stride. . The running of the Voltigeur Handicap, at one and a half miles, resulted in a stirring finish between Louis and Goaler. Louis took the lead after they had gone half a mile and never relinquished it. He was forced to stand a long, hard drive all through the homestretch and outlasted Goaler at the end. Goaler moved up fast and threatened seriously entering the stretch and then with victory within reach, suddenly, tired and failed by a small margin. Louis time of 2:35 represented a new track record for the distance. The Lincoln Plate, at three-quarters of a mile, started the afternoons entertainment. .The speedy mare Lady Luxury was the outstanding choice and flattered her supporters by leading to the last sixteenth. Then she tired and left Assumption, Asterisk and Flagging Spirit to fight it out. Assumption, showing improved form over his. recent races, had followed the pacemaker- closely from the start and when she tired moved into the lead and gnmely withstood Asterisks challenge at the end. The latter was forced to do his best to finish ahead of the fast-closing-Flagging Spirit. - SEA TAXES COVENTRY STEEPLECHASE, i The Coventry Steeplechase of ,000 "added brought six good jumpers to the post and all but Kingstown Pier finished the course. That veteran fell on the flat going to the third jump. The race was conceded to be a battle between the C. K. Harrison, Jr., nnd Mrs. F. A. Clark entries. The latters pair, Minata and Hibler, however, never figured prominently. It remained for Coronado, which gave promise as a jumper when he won -two races over the hurdles nt Tijuana last winter, to furnish the surprise of the contest and the only real contention encountered by Sea Tale. The Harrison mare fenced in faultless, style and after racing under slight restraint until the last quarter drew away when Coronado tired. Transpero was not hard ridden when it was seen that his stablemate had the race at his mercy. Jake Bauer has taken over the horses owned by R. A. Forsha and will ship them to Erie on Friday. The string Includes Golden Dawn, Yerity and six others. Fred Richards, the moving spirit of the Dorval Jockey Club, who came here to attend the meeting of the Canadian Racing Associations,, returned to Montreal tonight. Jockeys Gantner and Taylor .were, at the track this afternoon. Gantner will be out of the saddle for a few days, but Taylor has fully recovered from his illness and is ready to accept- mounts. Frank J. Bryan, Jack Campbell and Mortimer Ma-honey will leave for Baltimore at the conclusion of the races on Saturday to be on hand for the opening of the Laurel meeting. The steeplechaser Dandy came out of his race the other day quite lame. Uncle John is another racer that is said to be in a bad way and the pair will probably be retired for the year. . Malcolm N. MacFarlan, who has been officiating at several of the tracks in Canada during the past summer, will be one of the stewards at Kenllworth this fall. It develops that the ruling made against the steeplechaser Stucco at the meeting of the Canadian Racing Associations, held In Hamilton last summer, still stands. The committee declined to reopen the case at their meeting here yesterday, which means that the horse is still ineligible to start on Canadian tracks.
