VICTORY FOR COPPER DEMON Beats the Rancocas Knobbie in Roslyn Handicap Favorites in Eclipse. NEW YORK, X. Y., September 2S. The Quincy Stables Copper Demon, closing with a burst of speed through the stretch, wore down Knobbie in the last eighth and won the Roslyn Handicap at Aqueduct today. The race was worth ,750 to the winner. Frudery and Dimmesdale stayed away, leaving only Knobbie and Copper Demon to face the starter in the feature race. Knobbie got away in front and drew away from Copper Demon in the first quarter mile. From that point the Quincy Stables colt held his advantage and even drew up slightly on the leader during the remainder of the racing" in the backstretch. Rice attempted to move up with Copper Demon on the far turn, but failed to gain materially. In the stretch he took his mount to the outside of the Rancocas starter and forced him to a hard drive. Entering the last eighth Knobbie showed signs of tiring and though he held on gamely under Sandes urging could not resist the powerful rush of Copper Demon, which forged ahead to win by two lengths at the finish, while pandemonium reigned in the stands. The victory was a sweet one for trainer Fltzsim-mons. Since the Playfellow controversy started the track rivalry of the Quincy and Rancocas stables has been more spirited than friendly. Before that transaction disrupted relations between the Quincy Stable and trainer Hildreth Knobbie was sold to Rancocas by the former. Owner Johnson said before the race today Knobbie could never concede such weight as he did to Copper Demon and win at a mile and a sixteenth. Johnson Indulged in an enthusiastic demonstration of Ills own from his post in the infield as his horse came home a winner. Penman piloted Shaffer, son of Peter Quince Flying Frances, to his maiden victory in the third race, thereby completing a double for himself. Chesterbrook easily defeated the favorite, Blgheart, for second place. Shaffer wpnt to the front soon after the start and opened a long lead rounding the first turn. Penman had him under a stout pull all "tfinjugh-. the final eighth, while Clicsterbook, under hard pressure, was vainly attempting to overtake him. Bigheart had the advantage of a fast start, but he rapidly dropped back and was never in, contention after reaching the . first turn. Another favorite finished out of the money in the fifth race when Diomedcs went down to defeat before Paddy Whack, Pickwick and Lampus. Paddy Whack took the lead after racing St. Isidore into defeat at the head of the straightaway nnd, hard ridden by Turner, managed to outlast the fast coming Pickwick at the finish. Another fine day brought a big crowd to the track. The fields were exceptionally large in the overnight dashes. The popular fancy failed to strike with any accuracy aud one favorite after another went down to defeat. Sweepy gave the talent the final blow Of the day by his victory in the sixth race. He scored over Bellatrix by the margin of a head, with Doughnut in third place. The well-backed favorite Nose Dive failed to get into the money. Jockey F. Kcogh arrived at Aqueduct today from Laurel. He will leave today for Latonia to ride one of the Montfort Jones starters iu the Twin City Handicap on Saturday. Lampus has been sold to J. A. Coburn. Diomedes was claimed out of the fifth race by F. M. Kelly for ,100. C. A. Stonehams good stake racer, Yellow Hand, which bruised a hoof in his last start, is back in light training again. It is expected that he will be able to race again soon. Curfew pulled up in such bad condition after a moming gallop yesterday that he will probably be retired for the remainder of the fall season. a
