SURF RIDER ONCE AGAIN J. E. Maddens Colt Wins Oceanus Handicap in Game Finish. Queen Blonde at Long Odds C. Turner Again in Limelight with Three Victories. NEW YORK, N. Y., October 10. J. E. Maddens Surf Rider, running again without blinkers, defeated Irish Brigadier by a head in the Ojeanus Handicap at Jamaica this afternoon. My Play was third. The gameness of the Superman geldlug and Fators vigorous riding kept the Madden gelding in front to the end. He got away better than usual, went to the front immediately and set a fast pace all the way. Irish Brigadier, after a slow start, showed a great burst of speed when he challenged the leader and might have won if he had got away faster. As it was he almost succeeded in forging ahead of Surf Rider in the last few strides. Missionary, with which the Lexington Stable had declared to win, was Surf Riders strongest rival to the turn into the stretch. Here the Hourless colt ran out. and lost so much ground that he was never seriously in contention thereafter. Meantime his stable companion My Play, brotler of Man o War, had been working his way up after meeting with early interference. He moved up with a strong bid in the stretch, but tired m the final sixteenth. He held the remainder of the field safe for third money, however. The weather was clear, but a strong wind served to chill the spectators and slow up the running of the horses in the various dashes. The wind blew strongly against the racers as they came through the stretch and hurt the chances of those horses whose final bursts of speed is their strongest asset. The mare Queen Blonde showed a return to her best form in the third race, when she defeated the favorite, Pavia, by a length and a half. Scottish Chief was third. Pavia went to the front going to the first turn, but Queen Blonde quickly passed her and held command the remainder of the way. Marinelli put Pavia under a hard drive entering the stretch and moved up menacingly, but she tired in the final sixteenth and Queen Blonde began to draw away again. REGAL LODGE BEATS "WAR NOTE. Turner made it two in a row witli Regal Lodge in the second race. He kept in close pursuit of War Note to the lower turn when he moved up and challenged. Regal Lodge and War Note fought it out in the stretch and the later tired in the last few yards. Brumado, the only other starter, was never able to threaten the two leaders. Avispa, running in greatly improved form, was ridden to victory in the first race by jockey Turner. Margaret White finished second and Red Tom third. The latter was sent to the front soon after the start and kept in front to the turn. Here Turner moved up with Avispa. The two raced head and head entering the straightaway, but Red Tom tired rapidly and Avispa drew away into a four-length lead at the finish. Marinelli brought Margaret White up with a belated rush through the stretch to pass Red Tom for second place. Turner and Fator fought it out for the days honors In the final race. Going into the contest witli two victories apiece to their credit both riders were on their mettle. Turner was the victor when ho scored with Sea Cove, thereby completing a triple. Sea Cove followed Mercury while the latter had the lead and continued in closest pursuit of Monastery when he replaced the Vulcain gelding at the front. Then moving up on the turn Sea Cove took the lead when Turner called on him arid won under restraint by a length and a half. Monastery held a safe advantage over the remainder of the field for second place, but W. T. Grives, closing rapidly through the final eighth, nosed out Mercury for third money. A small fire of mysterious origin was discovered under the clubhouse stairway at the Jamaica course this morning. The blaze was quickly extinguished and the damage was negligible. War Note was claimed out of the second race by J. W. Gunu for ,SS0 and Brumado was also claimed out of the same race by J. S. Cosden for ,103.
