FINE RACING IN PROSPECT Churchill Downs Card Replete with Interesting Features. Fourteen Past Horses Named to Contest Falls City Handicap Excellent Sprinters Meet. LOUISVILLE, Ky., October 11. One of the best opening-day programs in the history of autumn racing in this city will be offered devotees of the sport here tomorrow. Fourteen long-distance performers were named through the entry box this morning for the- ,000 added Falls City Handicap, which will be contested over the route of one and one-eighth miles, and of this number it is not expected that more than three will be withdrawn. The top weights will be shared by a trio of three-year-olds Rangoon 118, Firebrand 116, and H. E. Coleman 111. As a sharpener for this stake race Firebrand showed a specimen of real speed this morning in working five-eighths of a mile in 59. Indications point to a continuance of the dry weather in this section, but the temperature took a sudden drop last night and early this morning, recalling the overcoats and wraps which hart been temporarily discarded dnring the past two days. Tho Churchill Downs track was never faster than now. The Columbus Day Handicap, a ,400 race fashioned for "sprinters, drew Bis. entries today. The heaviest impost here was assigned Distinction, 127 ponrfds." She -will find worthy opposition in Brook-lioTt; "High Cost and Miss Jemima, and this field appears to be about the best-matched of the day. Only three of the seven races will be run under claiming conditions. This trio drew limit fields. All of the racing officials are on hand for the opening. C. W. Hay, S. C. Nuckols, Jr., and Andrew G. Leonard, three of the stewards, came in this morning after spending a couple of days at their respective homes in the blue grass section, Judge Charles F. Price has been at his home here since Saturday night. EDWARD JASPERS HEALTH IMPROVED. Edward Jasper, who was confined to his bed with illness since the Latonia meeting closed, reported for duty today. He is still a bit indisposed, but will be able to assume his position as placing judge tomorrow. Captain Fred Fcnchler, who left Latonia to spend the remainder of his vacation at French- Lick Springs, Ind., was an arrival today. He plans to return to his home in El Paso, Tex., from here. George M. Hendries stable here is at its lowest ebb in a long while, numbering only eight horses. They are Exhorter, North Shore, Sagamook, Estero, Last One, Claymore, Fort Myers and Rocky Mountain. T. P. Hayes outfit is another that has been considerably reduced. He has Bonus, Aloft, Bewitch and Riga for the Greentree Stable, and Top Mast and Pumps for himself. The same rule regarding the limit size of fields as prevailed last spring again will be in use here. Fifteen will be permitted to start in races at three-quarters, six and one-half furlongs, seven-eighths and one mile, while twelve will be the maximum at other distances. For the first time in many years six and one-half furlong races are on this autumns program. No further word has been received from the trainers of the most prominent ellgibles to the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes in the East. The outlook now is for June Grass to be the only representative from that section. This race will have a net value in excess of 0,000 and will be decided on next Saturday.
