BIG CROWDS AT AUSTRALIAN RACES The spring racing of Australia is now at its height. October 1 to 3 at Randwick, the Sydney course of the Australian Jockey Club, two of the seasons important events were run. October 1 75,000 people saw the Derby, run for one and one-half miles, and won by Cupidon, with Furious second. Fourteen ran. Cupidon won by half a length, a similar distance separating the second and third. Time. 2:33. October 3 the Metropolitan Handicap, one and five-eighths miles, was contested in fine weather, and in the presence of 7S.000 people. It was won by Laddie Blue, with Prince Sandy second and Erasmus third. Betting was 14 to 1 against the winner, 8 to 1 against Prince Sandy, 10 to 1 against Erasmus. The Metropolitan was won by half a length; same distance between second and third. Eighteen ran. Time, 2:45. 1
