STEEPLECHASE A THRILLER Nose Separates Bullseye and Joyful at End of Cross-Country Feature at Laurel. LAFRKL, .Aid.. Ocotber 2i. Tin; Patuxent Steeplechase, which in a monetary way topped the card at Laurel Park this afternoon, brought together a good band of steeplechasers and resulted in a thrilling finish, iu which J. S. Cosdens Bulls-eye outlasted Joyful to win by a nose, while Phoenix was third. Bullseye. ridden by jockev Kennedy, was under restraint during the. early running and assumed the lead when called upon, at the second turn of the field. From then on it was a battle royal, with the result in doubt uutil the official placing was displayed. Clear but cool weather prevailed during the afternoon and topcoats were much in demand. The track was at its best and the card one of the best of the week. Racing was of a spirited order and f 01 111 011 the whole well observed, the majority of the winners being supported with rare confidence. The crowd was again of large proportions. A large field faced the starter iu the opening dash of the afternoon, which was for horses of the mediocre class. A spirited struggle resulted, in which Walnut Hall lasted to beat Summer Sigh, while Sunrose was third. Irainer Mike Kelly continued his successful streak when Alex II. demonstrated in the third race that Ik? is capable of defeating a better grade of two-year-olds than he had previously met, leading nearly all the way and easily holding his opponents safe at all stages of the contest. Baby Grand, under energetic handling by jockey Lang, was winner of the fifth race of the day, which was under handicap conditions. He was in close pursuit of the early pace throughout, saved ground at the stretch turn and outgamed The Archer after a terrific last sixteenth duel. The latter assumed the lead at the eighth post, but failed to hold his advantage. Bridcsmau was u fast closing third. Today was the first time two-year-olds have been asked to go a mile this fall in Maryland, and the winner turned up in Manhcim in a drive from Orris, while Colando was third. The winner circled the leaders and shook off Colando and held Orris safe. FINAL RACE TO LADS LOVE. Lads Love accounted for the final race of the afternoon, with Tuscan Maiden and Rubidium second and third respectively. The winner was under restraint for the first part, assumed the lead on the backstretch and drew away into a safe lead, which he maintained to the end. Frank Bruen of the Cuba-American Jockey and Auto Club was a visitor this afternoon iu the interests of the meeting at Havana. Mr. Bruen reported great progress and speaks enthusiastically for the coming Avinter. Henry McDaniels has thirteen yearlings stabled at the Ross farm for the Canadian sportsman Avhich are Avell advanced in their preliminary racing education. Ernest Hall shipped his stable to Pimlico this morning, while the Quincy Stable Avill be shipped over on Friday. Crack o Dawn was claimed from the last race yesterday for ,915 by T. E. Crist. Five broodmares, the property of W. J. Salmon, were shipped to Kentucky this morning. The following were transferred to Pimlico: Careful. Hobey Baker, Step. Lightly and Crossless. The remainder of the stable left for winter quarters at Kenning. Trainer J. H. McDonald Avill be in charge of the stable until December 1, when they will be turned over to T. J. Healy to train. Jockeys Coltiletti and Boyle were fined 00 each by the stewards for fighting during the running of the sixth race.
