GLORIOUS YEAR OF GLORIOUS RACING For First Time in American Turf History Seven Different Owners Win in Excess of 00,000 — Ten Leading Owners, Horses, Trainers and Jockeys — Outstanding Incidents of 1921 Racing j Lavish in rewards to the victors in racing was the good year 1921. So unprecedentedly | true is tins that for the first time in American turf history seven different owners gathered j in excess of the imposing sum of 00,000 in stable earnings. The year previous was one of remarkable racing prosperity and attainments, but the corresponding class of winning owners only numbered four. Of these Samuel D. Riddle and Ral Parr are not included in this years even. The other pair, H. P. Whitney and J. K. L. Ross, were joined last year by the Rancocas , Stable, Edward R. Bradley. Mor.ffort Jones, Quincy Stable and Benjamin Block. To Rancocas Stable, which to all racing intents and purposes ;s Samuel C. Hildreth, fell the honor of leading the owners list with a total won of 8263,500. Not especially fortunate in its two years, but possessing several of promise for the future, the stable had in Grey Lag the be.st three-year-old of 1921, and in Knobbie another worthy of any mans owning. Back of these were a number of fleet and hardy handicap horses of high class, of which Mad Hatter was usually estimated by Mr. Vosburgh to be about as good as the best. From the nature of its splendid home-bred resources the Whitney stable is always bound to be a dangerous competitor for premiership honors. It was bo last year. The stable missed in its quest for the Kentucky Derby, but took two of the principal prizes of the year in the Preakness stakes and Futurity Stakes. Possibly it would have finished first had BroomspUD not died soon after winning the Preakness. He was a colt of a rare order of speed, as he showed in a mile in 1 :36 -. at Louisville. Commander Ross had no new equine sensations to present, but his old and reliable standbys raced well enough to give him third place in the owners list, sturdy Boniface playing the star role. Two western owners, E. R. Erudley and Montfort "lor .. finished ft arta and fifth respect- ively. Braoleys crowning triumph coming when his colts Behave Yourself and Black Servant finished first and second in a memorable Kentucky Derby. Montfort Jones successes were mainly achieved by his two-year-olds, with the superb filly Miss Joy the bright particular star of his stable. The Quincy Stable had the best year of its existence. Never before did its stable returns approximate 00,000, but it passed well over that mark in 1921, with the speedy handicap horse Captain Alcock playing the principal part in its unaccustomed good fortune. Benjamin Block, who at one time did his best at picking up a living in minor ways about the I Chicago Board of Trade, blossomed into quick turf fame when he was inspired to become the owner of the greatest money winner of the jear in the invincible two-year-old Morvich. The other three owners who complete the list of ten principal winning owners of 1921 i are J. S. Cosden, whose horses raced in the name of R. Parr the year before. C. A. Stoneham, of baseball fame, and the industrious westerner M. Goldblatt, the latter owing his prominence to his sagacity in perceiving there was money to be made at Havana by a stable of fairly good ; horses. The astute Mose reaped the due reward of his enterprise in attaining a membership in the Big Ten, the records of the stables being: Won in Leading Winner Leading Winner 1920. Morvich was the horse so distinguished. That he was the best colt of his age is not to be doubted. But his exact standing in comparison with j Mash as Man o War, Colin and other star two-year-olds of former years cannot be satisfactorily , estimated until he has proved his worth in competition with tried older horses in 1922. This is because it is quite certain that the two year-olds he vanquished so easily in his eleven triumphs j were below the average. Had he met Miss Joy at her best a better line to his real capacity would . have been furnished. Next to him came Star Shoofs good son Grey Lag, a three-year-old of I demonstrated high class and not altogether a fortunate one. Leg infirmities, not disabling, but ] sufficient to affect his career materially, prevented him from a greater measure of success than , Ml to him. The cup horse of all history. Exterminator, had another year of wonderful success, and seems good for more before his sun sets. His total of 6,825 is remarkable J for a horse of his age and possibly a record. The fast Star Hawk filly Startle was fourth , in money won and is a fine tribute to her young sire. She is followed closely by the dead I Preakness Stakes winner, Broomspun, and he by the Latonia Championship Stakes victor, Sport- j ing Blood. This is a nailing good colt and one probably destined to figure largely in the racing of 1922, provided all goes well with him. Being a topweight in handicaps Mad Hatter had to pay the usual price for such high estimation in the way of a licking now and then, but the ; fact that he was only twice unplaced tells its own story of the valiant way in which he always , battled out his races. One of the most improved horses in training, the English-bred gelding Yellow Hand, forced himself into recognition as a real star by high-class racing in scoring ten ictories out of seventeen attempts and was but little behind Mad Hatter in money won. Bunting figures in the list of ten best winners because he won the Futurity and Behave Yourself because he was first in the Kentucky Derby. This colt furnished an example of the sometime singularities of horse ways and racing. He was a smashing good two-year-old and, in winning the Derby, he ran a race up to its best traditions, a fast race with full weight up and in consonance with his best form as a two-year-old. Yet he could not do a thing afterward and was ingloriously beaten in all of his subsequent races. The records of the big ten among the winning horses were: Horse. C. S. A. Pedigree. Owner. Fator. compare well with the best of days gone. Good hor:es make good jockeys and both of these boys had the advantage of riding the stars of the Rancocas Stable. Sande was bnst and his percentage of .33 for 340 mounts is eloquent testimony to bis proficiency in the aris of horsemanship. The real feature of the saddle work of the year was the prolonged struggle for the leadership in winning mounts between the three lightweight lads. . l.ang. B. Marinelli an.! L. Penman, a struggle that did not terminate until m the last week of the racing year, with Lang the victor and premier of 1921. That the three are promising is beyond question, but ihat this promise is to fructify into continued and great r excellence in tha future is open to doubt. The precedents furnished in recent years by the meteoric careers of •!. afeTaggart, W. Crump and C. Robinson, for instance, are not hopeful. Each in their lightweight days achieved a leadership for a year and faded into comparative obscurity following that year of stardom. Of the others who worked their way into the first ten Hack darner and Frank Coltiletti are good riders and anywhere and against any opposition. The others wire lucky, but :. Field rode well and has his career still in front of hint. The ten most successful riders and their records are these: Jockey. Hts. M. 2d. 3d. Unp, P.C. Amount. Audacious smashed the mile time of ta* greatest of all record breakers. Man o War. when he ran the distance in 1:35% at Belmont Park on June 1. Another mark of Man o War was ttered when Goaler ran a mile and an eighth in 1 :49 at Belmont Park June 10. This latter lime was also equaled later by Grey hag ai Aqueduct and was the more meritorious per- ii nuance of the two, as Grey La?, a three-year-old, carried 120 pounds, while Goaler, a five- - :-ohi. had only ninety-five pounds in the saddle when he surprised the racing world by bis tarthng and unsuspected display of speed. Three new Canadian records were also established uring 1921, two being made at Brighouee Park, Vancouver, B. C. and the other at Windsor. The latter was at one milo and an eighth, and again Grey Lag was the smasher; time 1:50, th 126 pounds up a slashing performance.
