Cuba, February 19. — The program at Oriental Park this afternoon was built up around the Caha-Aaserieaa Handicap. The stake, to which ,500 was adiled, was a dash of three-quarter-! mile, for three year-olds, and it brought out a field of five, two of which were coupled as the J. W. Panglo entry Ultimo, which nuns up a track record a few days ac.. was made the favorite. He was heavily supported and was ridden by N. Swart. At the barrier Ultimo was fractious and when the start came was rather slow to begin. When he got int.. hie stride, however, he moved up with a rush, and, drawing away, had a seven lengths lead passing the three quarters post. He then bolted to the outside and had to be pulled up to keep from going over the outside rail. This put him out of the struggle. In the stretch the Keene Brothers filly Comedie dAmour came through on the inside and at the end drew clear, defeating Ultimata by a length and a quarter. The race was rather slow, as the three , |u arters were run in 1:14. The gross value of the stake was ,390, the winners portion being ,00. Eleven platers clashed in" the opener and, after the smoke of battle cleared. Catoctin was home first by a length, with Lady Ivan and Primitive following in the order named. The veteran Butler captured the second race, easily taking the measure of Mike, the favorite, with Machine Gunner getting the short end of the purse. The third race was considered a test of strength between Perplexity and Mess Kit. but Morro Castle turned up the winner. Perplexity having to be content with second place, while Mess Kit finished outside the money. Bill Hunhy was most favored in the fifth, a dash of a mile and fifty yards, and again the backers of favorites were doomed to disappointment. The Englishman, the second choice, earning the decision after a spirited duel with Navajo, the latter just ailing to get up. INDEPENDENCE HANDICAP FRIDAY. The ladepeadeace Handieat, with ,000 added uiTiev. at a mile and an eighth, is the next Oriental Park -take fixtaiC, to be decided Friday. February 24. That day is known as "El Grito dc Baire." Which is the" Cuban national holiday. The stake received fifty-nine nominations, for which weights are due Tuesday. The crowd that gathered today to watch the racing was a large one and thoroughly representative of Havanas wealth and fashion. The delightful weather was characteristic of the Cuban winter season, which was no -mall factor in contributine t-i the afternoons enjoyment of the sport. Washingtons birthday, will be fittingly celebrated at Oriental Park, when the Havana Post of the American Legion will be guests of the lackey Club. The American Red Cross will be materially assisted in their drive for funds. Two special purses will be programmed, the American Legion and Little Hatchet Purses, both of which promise to prove most attractive events. Jockey R.
