Australia, legislators, waking up to the folly of its betting ticket taxation, have graded the tax" to the volume of the wager. Paddock bets are now taxed twelve cents and those on "The Hill," the popular crowd stands, four cents. Tickets at the minor meetings, outside the great Caulfield and Flemington courses, are taxed two cents each. It is also expected that in the near future the province will legalize the totalizator, as the mutuel machine is called in Australia, and thus get into line with New South Wales and New Zealand, the other important racing provinces. a *
