JAKE SCHAS SIXTH VICTORY I Proves a Popular Winner at Tijuana Saturday — Yermak by Inches. TIJlA.VA. Mexico. February 19. — The good thoroughbred Jake Schas. carrying the canary colors of i EL W. Barnes of San Diego, scored lis sixth vie- ■ tory at Tijuana Saturday when he defeated a good band of long distance horses in the fifth and feature race. It was a gallop at one mile and sev- eiity yards and, despite the fact that Jake Schas had won his previous race, his support was weak in comparison to his deeds. In consequence lie was the longest-priced runner of a field of seven. However, he did not parade to the post friendless, as the old fellow has quite a following among the fair sex. The sturdy son of Norford — Laura E. has the faculty of winning at a fancy price and can always lie depended iqion to do his best, his game-ness having never been questioned. He is a bit of a rogue while at the barrier, yesterday being no exception. Seemingly anxious to be away and at his task. Jake Schas kept lunging through the webbing and. nlImugh being rigged witli a BOSC rope, he pulled the assistant starter around and in other ways created much havoc at the starting post. Those who held tickets on the horse must have been of the opinion that hi- would wear himself out. This was not the case, for the Panics horse showed by his courageous dash through the stretch that a feint-hearted horse had no business battling with him. Shy of speed during the early running of the race he struck his lull stride in the last quarter and. passing Billy Laae midway in the stretch, held him sUfe from there on to the finishing post. Billy Lane was an easy second five lengths in advance of Plum Blossom, which, after forcing a stiff pace, tired and barely saved third place. Roisterer, the favorite, after showing the way until rounding the far turn, tossed it up and finished among the also raas. Jake Schas paid -1 to 1 in the Brands and when his price went up on the official board, a mighty cheer burst forth from the throats of the spectators, which demonstrated that there were more than a few that profited by his victory. TAMBIAN SPRINGS SURPRISE. The afternoons sport was ushered in with a five and a half furlongs dash in which Tamilian, with the novice jockey Halls in the saddle, provided an upset. Paying Ivetter than 25 to 1 she easily led Circulate and Laura Cochran under the wire. The latter was installed the favorite and flattered her backers by racing forwardly to the last eighth, where she tired. Apple Jack had the call ill the second over a large band of sprinters, but he was forced to acknowledge defeat before the speed of Billy Joe. which dashed past him in the last eighth to an easy win. Ispham. at long odds, was the best of the others. Alajah. which lias been quitting in all of her previous races, had speed in abundance in the third and won off by herself by five lengths, with Knight of Pythias and Lady Bourbon finishing next in order. The fourth straight favorite to go down to defeat was recorded in the fourth race when Point to Point, ridden by jockey Huntamer. finished in the wake of Qacea of Trumps. Point to Point probably was the better horse of the two, for he broke slowly and then made up much ground. However, his belated rush did not bring him closer than two lengths of the winner, while he had his troubles annexing second money from Red Man, which took the small end of the purse. PEGGY MARTIN LONE WINNING FAVORITE. Peggy Martin made every post a winning one in the sixlh race at one mile and, intelligently rated in front by jockey G. Williams, she had enough left at the end to hold Jewel City and Hot Foot safe in the final rush. Peggy Martin wa- the one and esUj favorite of the day that managed to gather winning brackets. Yermak and Mike Daly provided a rare thrill in the seventh race at one and one-eighth miles. These two fought it out in gallant fashion passing the stand, with the former winning by inches. Commander, rushing from the rear, nipped Zamloch a nose on the post for third place. The mare Miss Stat hem. owned by North and Howe, which broke down hopelessly Friday, will be shipped to the Meadowbrook Stock Farm at Pleasantou, Cal. There she will be bred to War Shot and then returned to San Diego to be turned out at Imperial Beach. Jockey . EL Miller will be absent from the saddle for the next five days, having been set down by starter Harry Morrissey. Commander was the target for four claims in the seventh race. In the shake-off A. Lund got the son of Broomstick for 00. The California stallion Von Tromp was well represented by winning thoroughbreds during the afternoon. Queen of Trumps and Garden City both being sired by him. For the first time in nine days, jockey Huntamer, who enjoys the distinction of being the leading jockey of 1922. failed to ride a winner out of seven chances. « a ,
