Among the Derby entries of this year appears the name of Spanish Maize. He is the English colt that raced so well in the Ross black and orange last autumn, a big. well-proportioned chestnut fellow now doing well in Henry McDaniels fine quarters at Laurel. Md. Spanish Maize was raced as Derby colts of his size and substance should be raced— late the year and mildly. Spanish Maize only started five autumn times and did not win. His first race was an educator with Harmonious, his stablemate, in the Woodbine Michaelmas Handicap, which Johnnie Dundee won. In his second race at Laurel he did better. Alex H.. a good colt, beat him. The name fellow and Cherry Tree were before him again a week later at Laurel. He was third again behind Missionary and All Fair the next week in the Laurel Manor Handicap. Spanish Maizes last race unplaced— was his best ami in the Pimlico Futurity he was fourth to Morvich. Lucky Hour and Runantell in the mile. Away slowly under Rice made up ground throughout and was running with stout courage in the stretch. Spanish Maize all about gave great promise for three year-old action. His looks and manners of going supported this promise. Spanish Maizes pedigree is a pure English one the soundest lines and with staying suggestions. Here it is: _• ,. rLord Lyon Minting [ Mint Sauce .FLlv ■ - | • csttratheoDau „ .■ = . J I Wee Agnes..
