JUVENILES STILL A PUZZLE Epidemic of Coughing Has De ¬ layed Elimination Process Practically None of TwoYear TwoYearOMs OMs Raced Thus Far Has HasShown Shown High Quality NEW YORK N T May 25 Seldom has a year of racing progressed as far as the present one has without some line having been obtained on the new crop of twoyear j olds By reason of the unusual epidemic cf i coughing that has visited both Xew York j and Maryland training quarters little or I nothing is Known of the new crop of thor ¬ oughbreds Some have shown evidences cf real race horse class but thus far there is not one of the juveniles that stands out far enough to attract any especial attention Blue Hawk attracted a deal cf attention when he won in sensational fashion through the mud at Jamaica but then along came Great Man the son of Great Britain and Metzic and he effectually squelched any pre ¬ tentious Blue Hawk may have bad to great nets Whirlwind was a widely heralded ju vcnile in the Rancccaa Stable string but he lias not yet shown that he is a real top notcher Others that were shown in Mary land gave evidence of promising quality but the fact remains that not one thus far un covered has raced in a way to be heralded as even a possible champion championOf Of course it is possible that one or other of those that have been raced will develop into a champion Morvich was not consid ¬ ered highly and he was a winner the open ¬ ing day of the Jamaica meeting in 1921 That was a selling race and his second vic ¬ tory was also in a similar contest That was the lowly beginning of the unbeaten winner of the Kentucky Derby and there is plenty of time for the new crop to develop but there have been over a dczen days of New York racing and no one juvenile ap ¬ pears to stand out over his fellows fellowsAll All of this may be blamed on the sick ¬ ness that has been especially prevalent among the young horses but this same sick ¬ ness has halted training operations to an extent that may make it much later before a definite line is obtainable obtainableThe The next truly big chance for the two yearolds and a stake in which almost all of the most promising prospects should be eligible is the Juvenile of the Westchester Racing Association to be decided at Belmont Park May 30 This feature attracted 174 nominations and if the future champion is not in such a list it win be strange indeed An additional interest will be had in the running of the Juvenile for the reason that it will mark the return of the silks of August Belmont chairman of the Jockey Club Mr Belmont hna not played his former important part in the racing of horses in recent years but he is bringing to the turf this year a notable collection of Nursery bred twoyearolds that should adequately bring back the glories of the old silks made famous by his illustrious father many years ago agoAmong Among the Belmont nominations for the Juvenile is a sister to Man o War This one is a chestnut miss by Pair Play and Mahubah that has been christened Mira belle Others of the Belmcnt nominations are Osprey a chestnut son of Fair Play and Olympia Diagram a bay son of Fair Play and Dragnet Messenger a chestnut eon of Fair Play and Mission and Metal a black son of Hourless and Moneta HE HEJIELMOXTS JIELMOXTS WELLBRED YOUXGSTEBS YOUXGSTEBSTwoyearolds Twoyearolds bred as these are can hard ¬ ly fail to make good and while they may not be ready for the Juvenile they are well engaged all through the racing year and will not lack for opportunity opportunityAnother Another entry of importance is Cyclone the son of Sweep and Ballet Girl for whicta J S Cosden paid the top price at the year ¬ ling sale at Saratoga last August This i colt la a brother to the good campaigner The Porter and was sent to the sales ring by CapL P M Walker Mr Cosdan paid 21000 for him Trainer William Garth early in the spring reported that the colt was training just as a 21000 yearling should train but Cyclone has not yet been to the post postHarry Harry Payne Whitney has no fewer than fourteen eligible for the Juvenile but his stable has been most unfortunate in the matter of sickness and whether or not he has the champion in his collection may not be known until long after the running of the Juvenile JuvenileThe The sister to Morvich a chestnut daughter of Runnymede and Hymir that has been christened Runelise is another of the band In fact eight of the Spreckels twoyear olds that were offered at auction in the Jamaica paddock Wednesday before the 1 races JLTO named for this big twoyearold i race of the Belmont Park meeting meetingJust Just what the Juvenile will do in pointing the way to the best twoyearold of the L year remains to be seen and it is devoutly to be hoped that before its running there will be a cessation of the epidemic that t has kept so many of the new crop away from the races
