JAMAICAS GREAT RACE BEST IN HISTORY QF METROPOLITAN JOCKEY CLUB TOTAL OF 196 705 DISTRIBUTED IN STAKES AND ANDPURSES PURSES RANCOCAS STABLE BIGGEST WINNER The first of the spring meetings over the New York tracks has come and gone Be ¬ ginning at Jamaica May 3 and continuing to May 24 the Metropolitan Jockey Club gave its patrons nineteen days of delightful and interesting racing during which time 114 races were run and 126705 distributed in stakes and purses The daily average distribution amounted to J10352 According to all reports it was the greatest meeting ever conducted by the Metropolitan Jockey Club The racing itself was wholesome cf high class sparkling with the displays of speed and gameness of many of our foremost horses It was interesting and exciting arousing the enthusiasm of the great crowds which were in daily attendance t to a degree only expected on unusual occasions One of the noticeable incidents in con ¬ nection with the sport this spring in Maryland and Kentucky and notably so at Jamaica j is the great Interest and marked enthusiasm of the general public in racing so much so that the newspapers foreseeing the trend of popular fancy are devoting more space to it than they have for a decade or so It augurs well for the future of racing and the great j thoroughbred industry While the Rancocas Stable got off In front and headed the moneywinning owners who j participated in the Jamaica racing It met with the keenest competition and many con ¬ tests which apparently seemed to be at the mercy of its standard bearers fell to otuer owners This is readily seen In the fact tnat the Rancocas horses finished second ten times when in a majority of those contests its representatives were counted on as al most sure winners Nevertheless it has a good start for the years honors and with the wizard trainer Sam Hildreth directing affairs as none know better it will indeed i be surprising if the great collection of star racers in that noted establishment does not figure prominently in this years racing Others who fared exeedingly well at Jamaica were J E Madden H P Whitney West mont Stable and the Quincy Stable The owners who won 500 or more each follow
