LATONIAS FINE MEETING Bachig in Full Swing and Attract ¬ ing Big Growds Next Satur ¬ days Big Features LATONIA Ky June 13 The Latonia meeting having got away to an auspicious start is now in full swing and progressing in a manner that is most pleasing to all well wishers of the sport of thoroughbred racing The increased interest evinced by the people of Cincinnati and the northern cities of Ken ¬ tucky finds abundant testimony in the great ¬ ly increased attendance during the first ten days and fully warrants the assumption that the meeting will prove the most successful that Latonia has ever had hadThe The custom of offering a double stake fea ¬ ture on Saturdays during the meeting has made a distinct hit with racegoers and prom ¬ ises to do much to make racing more popular than ever For next Saturday the Enquirer Handicap for threeyearolds and over and the Harold Stakes for twoyearold colts and geldings will be the big attraction Both stakes have an added money valuation of 5000 The Enquirer Handicap is of com ¬ paratively recent origin but the Harold has been run without interruption like the La ¬ tonia Derby from the inception of racing at Latonia in 1883 1883The The Harold Stakes always accounted one of the foremost of western turf fixtures for the juveniles is over the fiveeighths course and on the basis of ten starters it will have a gross valuation this year of SGOO For the approaching renewal of the race there are no less than 130 eligibles including many of the twoyearolds developed in the West to date The field that will go to the post in this event will be recruited from such youngsters of proven merit as Marshall Brothers Prince K winner of the Idle Hour Stakes at Lexing ¬ ton and two other races William Perkins Donges H H Hewitts Banter and Easter Bells D T Matlacks Guest of Honor G F Bakers Al Stebler and Hughes Graham C W Hays Taylor Hay F J Kclleys Skeezix II P Whitneys Mayor Carrel Rome Respess Banner Bearer R L Bakers Jack Bauer R H Andersons Actuary and Gallaher Broth ¬ ers Cherokee CherokeeHAROLDS HAROLDS PAST YflNXERS YflNXERSIt It is easily to be seen that with the young racers named figuring as probable starters it will be a race thoroughly in keeping with the best traditions of this stake which num ¬ bers among its thirtynine winners such stars of the American turf as Bankrupt Jim Gore Raceland Ben Brush Oiseau Sir Huon The Manager Old Rcsebud Escoba and Centi ¬ meter Last years running of the stake was The Enquirer Handicap the other out ¬ standing feature of this weeks racing was instituted in 191S by John Hachmeister then manager of the Latonia track and was first won by Boniface Courtship scored in 1919 and Drastic in 1920 Last years renewal was captured by Marjorie Hynes which is among the eligibles to this years renewal renewalThe The stake was named for the Cincinnati daily newspaper published by E B McLean and in recognition of the compliment Mr McLean annually donates a handsome silver trophy to the winner of the stake stakeEightyeight Eightyeight horses are eligible for this years running and from this number at least a dozen will be available as starters The latter with their weights are Fire ¬ brand 119 Distinction 119 Bit of White 115 Minto II 114 Dr Clark 117 Lady Mad ¬ cap 112 Paradcr 101 Rouleau 104 Marjorie Hynes 102 Advocate 101 Make Up 102 Sands of Pleasure 101 and Cherry Tree 9G 9GIn In the allotment of weights Exterminator drew high impost of 110 pounds but it is not likely that Mr Kilmers great cup horse will return to Kentucky to start in this race which will be a contest strictly between the western owned horses Lady Madcap a winner of the Inaugural Handicap will carry four more pounds in the Enquirer and is regarded as a sure starter in the latter stake Minto II which was beaten two heads in the Inaugural will pick up four additional pounds in Saturdays stake Firebrand which was unplaced in the open ¬ ing days feature gets off four pounds from that race
